Tachometer / Speedo repair
« on: June 03, 2023, 08:30:30 AM »
Hello everyone. I'm restoring a 1978 cb550k that has sat for about 10 years.

I noticed the tach wasn't working at all, so I ordered a new cable. Then I noticed it wasn't the cable. Used a drill to spin the cable, and either my drill is too slow or something is wrong with the tach because there was zero action on the tach. I started the bike and the cable moves when the bike is running. Attached it to the tach, revved the engine, no change on the tach.

I tried the drill on the speedo, it seems to JUST lift up off the pin when I spin the drill full speed.

I've searched around and found a few threads for tachs that jump / bounce around but none for my issue yet. I also found a few threads with photos but sadly none of the photos would load (photobucket currently unavailable)

Any suggestions?

Yup, get another tach
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).
