Slip on exhaust 4 into 1 joint leakage
« on: June 06, 2023, 08:30:00 AM »
Hey there,

I've mounted a 4 into 1 exhaust on my cb550 and used https://www.permatex.eu/product/exhaust-sealer/ for pipes into the collector. Applied both on the pipes and into the header before assembly but I keep getting leakages.

What are my options here?
Could I just weld the header to the pipes (this probably means I need to remove the oil filter if I want to remove the headers)?
Or is there some other sealant that is better and doesn't dry up that quickly?

thanks

If this is a proper slip joint (like my K3), why are you trying to seal it? My collector slips over the four head pipes about 1”. Spring clips just stop any rattle or chance of the collector backing up…… A picture would help.

I’m running a restrictive baffle to reduce the amount of db. So that’s why I tried to seal it. If it was non restrictive I wouldn’t have this issue I think

Is it that noisy without the sealant? Those joints are designed to work as open slip joints.  If you’re getting tons of blow back, your muffler may be too restrictive. That Gemini can on our K3 keeps the bike reasonably quiet and creates no back pressure……

It’s not really noisy on the leaks. Just the foul black marks are meh

Clean it all off and use nothing!
