exhaust clashing with swingarm
« on: June 08, 2023, 05:50:48 AM »
Hello. I don't know why but in my bike (750 K1) the rear swing armi is clashing with the nut of the swing arm on the right side.
Exhaust are original HM300, the swing arm have same distance to the frame on both sides (on the triangle that holds the footrest, see yellow arrow) meaning that the swing arm is centered and symmetrical.
On picture 4 the blue arrow shows the distance between exhaust and swing arm, and in such I have moree on the left side than the left side.
I don't know how to fix it... The only solution seems to be move the nut on the left side. Is it allowed to do so ? thanks

Just put an extra washer under the axle head and you're good to go.

The simplest fix is to pull the long bolt that retains the RR passenger foot peg and both RHS exhaust pipes. Slip a washer between the pipes and the frame tube and you will create a bit of extra clearance.

I'm referring to the axle of the wheel. On one side there is thread + nut (see first figure above) and on the other side the cap of the axle.

The cap is much wider than (thread + nut) so I want to reverse the axle left/right

Only if you are in England.....

Something isn't lined up on the exhaust. Loosen the header clamps so you can swing the muffler bottom outward on the bottom pipe. Probably have to push on the header pipe towards the oil filter as you pull the bottom of the muffler seam outward.

I have the nut on left side on both my bikes. CB750 K2 and K6.
One has Yamiya no numbers 4-4, the other 4-2-1 but has had same 4-4 and lotus root 4-4 earlier.

I changed side early 80's. Probably for easier access  of the nut when using 4-1.

My sidecar is sporting Comstar wheel and the nut is on the inside.  It just makes sense.

It does not matter what size is the nut on for a bike as long as you can get the wheel off.

the longo bolt ha a calibrated length and is not possible to add extra washers , and I need to gain approximatly 5-10 mm..

The bracket on the frame that the exhausts mount to is bent inwards, not uncommon

Hello.  Today I flipped the axle left/right and is ok.
But, as you can see in picture, the gap is not so wide as in other bikes.
I suspect something different in my set of HM300 or may be the brackets bent inward.

That will work, wheel possible to remove with pipes in place.

My bikes have riveted chains so front sprocket with chain lifted from axle.

Sprocket and chain pushed backwards for chain slack, rear wheel most forward. Chain can now be lifted off rear sprocket when chain guide is removed.
On the reverse order.
Both my bikes will soon get new rear tires....

I just did a rough measure of the actual swingarm to the inside flat area of the lower mufflers on a friend's K4 with original 341 mufflers on it still, original owner.
Right side where nut usually is, @ 44mm. Left side is @ 34mm.

Swingarm clearance to frame just above the muffler/passenger peg bolt is just over 7mm.

As a reference for you to measure your bike, this is on my lift table, sitting on the rear wheel.

If the axle nut is on the left side, be careful when adjusting chain and tightening the big nut. It is possible then to push the bike right off the sidestand/centerstand when tightening that big nut! Try to always tighten/loosen that nut by pushing down/up instead of forward/back. ;)

Good point, Mark.
I always do the up-down movement since it is easier.

Tighten clutch center nut can move bike when doing clutch job. 5th gear and a 2x4" plank in front of rear wheel or behind during removal helps.
That plank useful when engine need to run during carb sync. Under sidestand make bike to stand almost straight up.

I have several planks in that size ca 400-500mm long. Good for various jobs under bike, engine when on floor etc.
