Wix 24940 oil filter, wix wins round 2!

 I bought 4 wix 24940 oil filters from rock auto a while back and today I tried one on my 78 gl1000. It won't tighten down because the distance between the rubber seals is 1.95", it crushes the spring and washer flat and still doesn't meet the engine case.
  The one that was on it is 1.65". I had planned to use the other three filters (same part number) on my cb750's but doubt if they will tighten up.
 I ran to Advance Auto and got a KN401 to get me going, it was only slightly wider than the old one, @ 1.72"
 I recently read on facebook that a couple guys were having trouble with the filter housing leaking, I'm wondering if this is a thing.

i have used wix filters for years on my k-6 and never had a problem .   maybe a mis-box ?

Might be worth a try to contact WIX directly with the sizes you measured ?? Never hurts to try :-).

Could be a counterfeit filter...even normally reliable suppliers can get duped by distributors that inadvertently hook up with a scammer that gets past their checks and balances.

Hear about Firds problem with stolen vehicles, recently a small car dealership in Phoenix, independent, bought some new F150 trucks that had been stolen from Ford in Michigan in a storage/holding lot and they had bogus titles out of Georgia. Ford had not even reported them stolen until months after the theft and the police came knocking and seized them from the dealer and the customers whom had bought them. Dealership is out 120k and ruined reputation along with inability to buy anything at dealer auctions or credit. All their bonds are having to get paid as well. It all links back to the companies running the storage lots not keeping good inventory control and storing vehicles unlocked with keys in them and Ford not keeping good inventory control and often taking months if ever reporting the vehicles stolen. If they had been reported missing stolen they would have been radioactive and no reputable company or auction house would touch them. But, the appeared legit and the stolen blank titles out of Georgia had made them pass initial muster on looking legitimate. It was only digging in a little deeper things started to not add up.


Sorry you are having problems with the filters... hope you can get it satisfactorily resolved.

Maybe Polacks just messed up conversion from inches to mm?  ;D

In Europe was a number of scandals involving products from Poland. For instance using technical salt in human food.

Might be worth a try to contact WIX directly with the sizes you measured ?? Never hurts to try :-).

Anyone here with new Wix filter on the shelf that can compare packaging and dimensions?

I installed a new Wix filter in my K5 a couple of weeks ago with no issues but it was a couple of years old. I don't remember where I got it and I trashed the box. Probably got it from NAPA or Amazon.

Interesting find.
I had to check a few from my stock ;)
The 2 to the left are shorter rubber to rubber outer (ca 42mm)
The other K&N, Emgo ca 44mm.

All almost equal total height outside, less than a mm in difference.
I have 10 more of the K&N so I hope they are good ;D

!! The supplied o-rings can not be used!!
Vesrah 4.4mm when measure with plastic bag.
K&N 4.1mm with plastic bag.


I have bought a bag of 89x4.5mm o-rings to be used for years. I have measured thickness, 4.5mm.
I hope I can use same o-ring for 3 oil filter changes.

Not overtighten to cause o-ring to collapse too much is my thought when tighten the bolt.

You are saying that the KN O ring is incorrect ?? That kind of sucks :-(. I only have a KN filter at this time and am preparing to change oil and filter on my K2 soon.

NAPA lists a 4941 filter as being correct ? Folks say WIX makes NAPA filters ?

I think all oil filters have too thin o-rings.
Buy separate 89x4.5mm or stock Honda.

 My issue is not the o rings at all. I didn't even change them. 
  The filter body thickness from the rubber that meets the washer and spring to the rubber that meets the engine is further apart than the old advance auto store brand filter or a new KN401. The spring and filter are squeezed tightly together in the housing and the big O ring has not met the engine yet.

 Around 42mm would be correct, these are close to 49.5mm

That differ a lot. Must be wrong part or mislabeled boxes.
Correct filter type often named 401 as I have seen.

It is my understanding the Napa Gold filters are made by Wix, yes.
I've never had a problem with the o-ring supplied by Wix.
I have noticed the Emgo o-rings seemed a bit thinner. But I haven't used an Emgo filter in a long time.

I had a bunch of Hi-Flo filter before.  A shame I did not find one now. Plus other strange Japan made filters I bought from Yamiya a few years ago.

I like to have such stuff in stock as motor oil, throttle, clutch, speedo and tacho cables. And some boxes of plugs.

I bought 4-5 US gallons of Spectro Heavy Duty 20W-50 2 years ago .

I noticed that I had  2-3 gallons left so visited same seller early this year to buy more before price rallye as everything else nowadays.

Holy sh!t, price +50%!!! >$60US/gallon + shipping :(
So happy I ordered when price was good.

I ordered 10 pack K&N filters from Germany for a good price. Lower shipping each when ordering more.

Engine builds consume some oil and filters when just restored.

I have some good priced 4L Eurol Motor oil too, mineral as synthetic  ;)
I use my stock of Red Line and Spectro as ZDDP additive to 2L Eurol at each change.
My K6 made over 10.000 km last year so 3 changes.

Not too rich carbs now so 5000km intervals can work as long as oil feels good.

Anyway, the too long filter must be a filter to other engines.
A mystery to be solved.

I just went out and checked my shelf. I have a Wix 24940, filter marked 24940 and a Fram CH6009. (Yeah, I know, Fram sucks.)  I have used both in my K5 before.
For the heck of it I dug out the Wix box from the trash can from the filter I changed in my K5 a couple of weeks ago. It was also 24940.
This site: https://www.oilfilter-crossreference.com/convert/Wix/24940  lists the filter dimensions.

The site shows the dimensions as the same, but the cross-reference numbers differ for some makers, although it is just some random web site.

I'll bet the 40/41 filters differ in some dimension not listed and that difference makes the 41 filter incompatible with the CB750 SOHC's and somehow you got 41 filters that are marked 40.

The 350,400,500,550,750,gl 100 to 1200 are all the same Honda part number, or at least they were when the bikes were new!
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

About oil filter people has bad thoughts about.

I read that Emgo could be bad, falling into pieces or similar.
Any experience like that?

I have only use them as first filter after a rebuild where filter and oil is changed after 200km or so.
