400/4 caliper holder
« on: June 11, 2023, 01:02:01 AM »
Hi all, I was having a look at the front brake on a 1978 400/4 F2. There is a bit of play between the caliper holder and the holder pin, so looking at the movement at the caliper end it seems a fair bit. I have ordered a new caliper holder pin although the existing pin doesn’t really look too bad. I’ll grease it up and put it back together when the new pin arrives- if there is still play how much would you say is acceptable?
Thanks

Welcome aboard the forum Dod from across the pond in New Hampshire.  (I see this is your 1st post on here)

Is this movement with the holder while assembled on the forks and the wheel and rotor in place?
When you say the pin are you referring to #335 on the fiche from CMS NL?

BTW Go to the new members section and introduce yourself and your bike.

Its normally the alloy bracket that wears after time, go to amazon and look up mmatti they do a repop caliper assembly and also one complete with bracket for a 500/550 which i think is same as yours

From memory, I think the 400F bracket is even smaller than the 550.. maybe the same as a 350F? I machined two small counter bores (top and bottom of the bracket) and then pressed in two bronze bushings and reamed through to take the new pin. Real pain, but lasted forever. Know a retired machinist?

Thanks Bryanj I’ll have a look at that -makes sense the holder and pin could wear.
Newday777 - yes that’s the pin I am referring to. It is while completely assembled there is movement on the caliper at the disc while everything is bolted up

BenelliSei, I like the sounds of that too I could buy a bush from eBay , get the holder machined out and bushes pressed in and fit with the new pin.
Thanks all for the replies

The 400 bracket(caliper holder) is 45115-323-010
The 550 bracket is 45115-323-010 same as the 550

David Silver doesn't have any at the moment Dod but you can get on the waiting list as they may get one in a NOS parts lot

Looking at my friends that have Honda Restoration (NOS Parts) here in NH have at least 1 on hand. David Silver and CMSNL both buy parts from them so there are still a few available. You can order directly from Steve but only if you order more than £135 in parts at the same time otherwise they cannot sell and send anything to you.

There's also this solution. Remove the bracket, drill a hole all the way through, tap for a small grease nipple, re-fit, pump full of grease, and repeat periodically..  it works!
