74 CB550K Speedo
« on: June 16, 2023, 07:07:47 PM »
Speedometer question.

I have a 74 550k.

The speedo dial is slow, for lack of a better term. Takes a long time to get up to speed, then a long time to go back down again. Been sitting for 15 years.

Changed tach and speedo cable, same issue.

I was curious if this will work itself out.

Otherwise, I have this speedo set from either a later model K or possible a 500 twin. (See photo below)

The mounting holes are the same and these are in MUCH better shape. Can they be swapped out and still give accurate mph?

500 and 550 speedos (thinking of those swimming pants now  :o) have the same gear ration so yes, they can be interchanged.
it might be that it sort itself out, though. you could just mount it and drive around with it for a while to see what happens. i bought once an original old speedo (not the swim pants) for my 550. it was one that was brand new and had been sitting on the shelf in an old shop for decades. was also a bit slow at first but sorted itself out and works fine now.
