How to Connect Spark Plug Wires to Boot
« on: June 20, 2023, 09:10:33 PM »
Hello all, probably a very obvious answer to this question, but on other motorcycles and vehicles, I've only dealt with spark plug wires with the boots already attached and non-removable.

I am replacing the ignition coils, wires, boots, and plugs on my 79 CB650. The new set of ignition coils come with wires attached, but boots are separate. The insulation runs up to the end of the wires, and I can see them in the middle there, but I don't see any way of crimping or connecting the boots the ends of the wires.

Two questions: 1) I expect I need to trim back the insulation around the ends of the wires, but wanted to confirm, and 2) how do I actually make a secure connection between the wire and the boot? On the old boots, they were fairly easy to just pull of the wires, which doesn't seem right, so here I am.

Thank you,

You are overthinking it, the plugcap just screws in the wire as it is. First slide the (loose) rubber sleeve over the wire so you can see what you are doing, then screw the cap on, slide the rubber back on the cap, and that's it! ;)

Welcome to the forum Brycelyoung

If you look in the end of the boot, actually called spark plug caps, you will see a threaded stud with a sharp pointed end, this screws into the plug wire from the coil.

The plug wires do not get striped back of insulation. The wires are to be square cut on the ends so the cap can screw into the high tension lead in the wires.

Here's a video on how to replace the spark plug caps

Thank you both. As you said, definitely just overthinking it. My confusion came because I was originally looking at the wrong side of the cap (the side that plugs into the spark plug). Dumb question, but someone's got to ask it.

Thanks for the response, I'll go introduce myself.
