Yamiya Red foam group buy idea???
« on: June 21, 2023, 09:28:19 PM »
Would doing a group buy of the Red foam for the seats make sense since Yamiya is charging $200 to ship one to the US? Seat foam is $350...
They wouldn't charge $200 each would they? Could it save you enough to do a group buy them whomever gets the package then reships in the US or would it negate any savings? Just a wild hair idea...

David….. It is a lot of shipping cost, but I fired off my order yesterday. I’ve been waiting for that red foam for over a year! I order some trim clips, belt hardware and gas cap pins too (small stuff). The shipping total was $140.

Shipping for one is $140, for two it's $205, for four it's $415.
I've waited so long I'm almost over it, not sure I still want one, especially since the Yamiya red foam I have is showing signs of old age after a few years of climate-controlled storage. Still has its original seat cover so it's led a pretty soft life.

One seat foam is $225, shipping for one is $140. They are taking no prisoners on shipping. The last price I got  from JT Marks when he was living, was $300 shipped and I was reluctant to pay that.
One option is to use a white foam, add the ducktail and poke some bits of old red foam through the holes in the seat pan. Dishonest? Only if you try to sell it as real.

I’ve reached out to yamiya multiple times. First when it was out of stock. It’s made by some single old man in Japan, that’s why it’s so expensive and the volume is so low. That said it’s been increased by $100 since the last time it went out of stock. Now up to $350.

I emailed them again after it came back in stock and asked why the shipping is $200 (to west coast US). They said it’s based off off of weight or volume. That’s why the foam is the same shipping price as a complete seat. The volume is the determining factor.

Also I see people suggesting to dye white foam. Where are you getting white foam in the ducktail shape? I’ve never seen it

I was planning to glue on the ducktail part, then I got a nos K1 seat and just slapped it on as is.

Here is a late 1970 seat foam, notice the mix of red and yellow foam.

Is the ducktail really the ONLY difference in shape? I swear the k0 seat has a more complex shape than the flat topped later models.

My 69/70 seat pans seem to have a bend in the middle but to be honest I have not stretched a K0 seat cover over a different foam.
I suspect I can sculpt a foam to work though, I cut down a Saddleman double bucket seat to fit a 76F seat cover so I'm sure I can remove or add anything it needs. That said, if you value your time, it might be easier and nearly as cheap to just buy a Yamiya foam.

I sent an email to JT Marks daughter to see if she is ordering from Yamiya these days. JT was always able to beat the shipping cost down a lot.

Comes with a reproduction seat (DSS and the like).

Will do some dye testing here shortly.

Strikes me that were all trying to figure out how to get the shipping cost down on a $350 piece of foam. The second thing anyone ever tells me about my bike is how bad the seat looks. I’m still not trying to pay $350 for foam.

One of these, a little more foam, glue and some sanding you have one around a hundred. It just ain't red and needs the hump added.

Wow, I was not aware of the exchange. Last time I made a yamiya order JPY was 1:100 USD. That's $245 today. Still pretty high, and yeah I see they are sold out now anyways  ;D
