Aftermarket for CB750K inner wheel bearing retainer?
« on: June 24, 2023, 09:47:31 PM »
Out of all the CB750K models that were produced, I really can't understand why aftermarket retainers are not available for the CB750K's.
Yes, I'll admit Honda OEM's are available from vendors in Europe (including an astronomical shipping fee), but I just can't justify the cash for those (being retired/on fixed income, and all...).  I'm looking for an aftermarket for the inner rear wheel bearing retainer (partno 41231-300-020).  These are so hard to get out and easily damaged.  Is there anyone out there who may know of a good alternative?

Welcome aboard

Well I just checked the part number and it's available from https://www.hondarestoration.com/photodetail.asp?hrPart=41231-300-020 they have at least 2 on the inventory.
It's also available from South Sound Honda in Washington. https://www.southsoundhonda.com/--xpartsstream#/s/HOM//41231-300-020//1/y

Did you drill out the stakes punch mark in the ad thread edge before trying to remove the retainer? Not drilling the stake punches is how the retainers get damaged along with not using a tool to properly remove it.

Many have inadvertently buggered up the retainers not knowing about the need to drill out the stake punch marks before turning the threaded retainers(some are left handed threads!)

And the tool is super easy to make. Just get a piece of flat stock from the hardware store, two 5mm bolts and nuts, and drill two holes the correct spacing and fasten the bolts with the nuts. Insert the tool after drilling the stakes. Hold the bar flat and tap lightly with a hammer.  Works perfect!! Makes for easy installation also.

Here's a question.  Why is the inner bearing retainer ring on the drive side of the hub even necessary at all?  The bearing is an interference or press fit, and bottoms against an inside lip.
The brake side bearing hole has no lip, so the inside bearing spacer has to be put in and the bearing carefully installed to the proper depth.

So what does that bearing retainer do?  Typical Honda over-cautious design?  They continued this hub design on the CB500-550-650 fours and DOHC 750s and 900s, but never used a bearing retainer again. And Kawasaki and Suzuki never used them on their superbikes. Pressed in wheel bearings do not move laterally.

The outer bearing retainer, in the sprocket carrier, contains a seal, so is useful, but everyone later used a seal the O.D. of the bearing.

That's a good source, but the inner one on the rear, 41231-300-020 is not among the ones listed.
