1973 CB500 Four Adjuster Clutch Not Moving
« on: June 26, 2023, 05:44:55 PM »
The adjuster clutch would not move (yes I loosened the locking bolt). I removed the crankcase cover, disassembled and cleaned everything like new.

Applied fresh grease, and still does not turn at all.

I had to gently tap the adjuster clutch to remove and install into the crankcase cover, seem like a very tight fit.

Any ideas why this is happening?

Thank You

Welcome to the forum Psychobilly  :o

The 'adjuster clutch' ???? Maybe as in clutch lifter adjuster on the sidecover or the adjuster on the clutch handle?
Can you be more specific?

Would give us some history of your bike and why and what you have done to it to this point?

OK I'm not real familiar with the CB500/550 clutch but here is the 'adjuster clutch ' #5 according to the parts fiche. Is this what you are referring to?
If so, we're you able to turn it with the cover off so no pressure was on the adjuster?

Yes, it's #5 in the diagram.

It will not turn with the cover on or off. I currently have it off the bike (with the sled lifter #3 removed), it will not turn.

I've had the bike for about a year, riding it 3-5 times a week. Recently, I've had trouble finding neutral after 30-40 minutes of riding.

So I went to adjust it at the crank case and it would not move. So, I ended up taking it apart to clean and lubricate.

Also, I think the neutral issue is the clutch rod. It's broken.

I did some research on the 500 clutch and my next question was going to be if the rod was in 1 piece or not. So you need to get another rod. They aren't available new from Honda but there are some used on ebay. The part number is 22850-323-000,  and apparently the cb450 and 500T use the same rod with a different number 22850-292-020

Did you get the adjuster out of the cover and get it apart to inspect it?
Do you have the Honda shop manual for your bike?

If you don't have the Honda shop manual you can download it here in the manuals section

Also mine needed some 'persuasion' to have it freed. That type of corrosion is the one yachtsmen are all to familiar with... Prior to assembly add just a hint of lube in the hole of the case.

I've already removed it and ran it though the parts washer like new. Applied fresh grease.

I guess I'll try using polishing compound to go a step further.

Yeah mine was abused, so only half the worm gear works.

It’s basically flipped upside now.

Turning part #5 is key to be able to make the rod disengage the clutch plates with the friction plates
