Small nail in rear tire, should I patch tire?
« on: July 11, 2023, 03:54:21 PM »
Went for a ride today and after a few miles it began to feel odd, so decided to make it short and went home.

Rear tire pressure was about 12-15 psi.

Found a small nail.  I am ordering a new tube, but with a nail this small, do I need to patch the inside of tire?

I’ll be interested to hear what others say, but I’d make sure the rubber is nice and smooth on the inside and install the new tube. I seriously doubt it needs anything else!

I would put a new innertube in and you should be good to go.  Only time you need to patch the tire would be for tubeless.

If you were going to ride bike in wet weather it would keep moisture out of the tire/rim to patch the tire too. That's the only advantage or reason to do it imho

I would not patch it with a new tube. If you patch it the tire has to come off completely and if its just a new tube then only one side. Gotta make sure all the steel comes out though.

Make sure there are no raised bits arround the hole which might rub the tube
