I'm going to work on my motorcycle seats(not a sohc4)and improve the foam which is old.
I would like to learn which different grades of foam are available;is there a youtube that will teach me this ?

I will keep the original foam but cut out a section/s on top where I want to add a piece of thin closed-cell foam? to improve the density/feel of the seat and install it between the piece I've cut out after removing a layer of about 1/2-3/4". I'll save the top, contoured piece of original foam which I cut off so it will exactly match the height and shape of my original seat foam and how it matches the outer edge curve inside the seat cover:I'll 'sandwich' the new piece of foam in between the lower part of foam & the top piece I cut off, then use contact cement to seal it together.
I hate sitting/riding on a piece of old foam which has lost most of it's support  :D

Some guys are using cut down foam rubber garden mats made to kneel on.  I found a stranded product that resembles a big coarse fiber Scotchbrite at Joanne fabrics . I used it to smooth out the transition of different pieces of foam and previous damage.
I also used a garbage bag under the seat cover to help make it easier to pull the cover on.

I did because it was torn and rotted, I actually glued chunks into the craters. Now I'm most of the way through making a big old double saddle seat into a stock 77 super sport seat. (It was on a super sport pan).
The foam needs a little more sanding, I used an electric knife and an 80 grit sanding disc to shape it and went easy. That makes a lot of dust.

I use those folder type paper clips to hold the seat cover while I get it looking right and then I hook it.

The cover I used over the foam was "polyester batting" from jo-anne fabrics. it's about $5 a yard. It's easy to get lumps in the foam so test and adjust a lot.

Did the foam gain a more firm feel to it after you finished working on it? Did you use another similar piece of Honda seat foam for 'parts' ?   Any pics ?

Good idea, but I wonder if inserting a thin layer of foam in your “original foam sandwich” will really help? The old stuff will still collapse and your improvement will not be noticeable. Unloaded, it will probably fill out the cover more, and look better.

My inclination would be to replace all the foam. If you have the cover off, are you replacing it too? I usually put a thin layer of plastic stretch wrap between the foam and cover. Really helps the cover to move around and get it in the correct position. A second pair of hands is really handy too. I use the old style “bull dog” paper clips, as suggested above.

I was actually trying to repair where the foam damaged by weather exposure near an old tear rather than making it more or less firm. The polyester batting was there to bridge over the repairs where I glued in pieces to fill the bad spots.

JT Marks daughter did not have a red foam nor has she ordered from Yamiya yet. She did mention waiting for a bigger order to save on shipping. Yamiya does have them in stock already. My old original seat really sifted a lot of red dust onto the battery area. It does sit a lot better than the reproduction seat with white foam.

I hope a company will begin manufacturing high quality replacement seat foams to an exact match for many makes and models of vintage bikes,on a large scale.
Lot's of vintage bikes all over the world that need quality replacement seat foam.

I found an excellent seat cover manufacturer on ebay and have purchased from them before;Made in USA quality in Sweet Grass,Montana. The ebay seller name is 'gumtwo' and they have a Lot of different covers. They don't have HONDA or other manufacturer names printed on the back though.. You can get a stencil and spray it w/ flexible coating.
I would like to see someone offer as many replacement seat foams as they do seat covers;replace them together..  ;)

I also use their covers and they are excellent! I’m pretty sure the one I’m saving for the S/c is from them.

I've bought foam from this place a couple of times.  You can get sample packs with different densities for $5

I asked Sargent in Fl. to send me a small sample piece of their 'atomic seat foam' and they wouldn't.

For Red I built the seat from layers of carpet padding.  The multicolor foam stuf from Lowes or Home Depot.  In the middle I left a rectangular hole, filled it with seat foam and put one layer of padding over it - for the tailbone.  The glue I used was 3M 77 spray. Directly under the cover is layer of padding from Joann's.

It serves me well, the longest ride ever was Detroit - Virginia in one day.

Prokop, does it give you a firm platform when shifting your weight around to control the bike ?
Comfortable too ?

The rectangular hole reminded me of a bad seat I had once. I fixed it by making a hollow area under the cover in the middle. You don't want your weight carried on your tailbone or boy parts. If your thighs can help with the load that's better yet.
