fork's spacer rings

Hello. on my K1 one of my fork oil seals has failed. The oil seal I'm pretty sure is a 35/48/11 (early version of forks were 35/46/11) and I put SAE 15 viscosity oil instead of the recomented SAE 10.
I then discovered that is missing one part (the "14") that is a ring giving a function like a spacer (§OEM number 51452-319-010)
Do you confirm that is regularly installed ? because is difficoult to find.  thanks.

I think you have your sizes wrong, inner and outer stay same but thickness alters and spacer is for thin seals, but my memory is old and i think there was a bulletin about the change

I think I reused that washer/spacer on my K1. It’s really a function of the seal width. If your seal width is the same depth of the recess (it looks that way in your photo) don’t try and stuff one in there. The snap ring will retain it just fine. It makes no difference in the performance of the seal.

Anecdotally, I've had to think about this in the past with my '82 CB650. When I rebuilt the forks several years ago, I found that there were no back-up plates between the seals and circlips, even though the parts diagrams all show them. I ordered new Honda seals (37x50x11), drove them in, and installed the circlips. Seemed that it would have been nigh impossible to fit anything between.

My guess is that there were later revisions that may or may not have been documented. Maybe thicker seals were used after the diagrams were drawn out and FSMs were written, leaving unrevised documents as the source of truth. I very well might be talking out of my ass though.

But if you are seeing a gap between the seal and the circlip, I suppose you'll need to either source the correct back-up plate or a thicker seal that will fill that gap. Leaky seals are real jerks.

Thanks to bryanj for the bullettin.
The seals on the market today are 11 mm (Honda or replica) , so will I have to search and put such spacer rings? thanks.

If you take your old seal to any good bearing/ seal supply house, they can provide you either the double seal or a back up washer (for much less than the Honda price). Just bring along the old seal and your measurements for O.D. and height you want, and the O.D. Of the shaft (fork tube). My Benelli SEI had double fork seals in the front and the Bearing House guys in Peterborough got me replacements in a few days.

Never seen that before. Next time my K1 will get the double seal!
