Recommend a #3 JIS driver with a hex base or shank?
« on: July 26, 2023, 10:42:25 AM »
I was trying to get my pulse generator assembly off so I could clean and lubricate the advance mechanism for the first time in its 40 year old life. Even with my fancy Vessel impact JIS driver, I cannot get any of the 3 mounting screws to move. It is not stripping anything, and gets such good purchase on the screws that it can stick to them without me holding it. I think I need more rotational leverage.

So are there any recommendations for a decent quality screwdriver that has a hex base or shank? Vessel has a #3 with a hex on the shank, but I also want to see if there are any other good options.

I use a JIS bit in a wrench socket or a JIS impact driver. It's the heavy-duty metal one you can really whack with a hammer (not a screwdriver). Put some heat on the screw if it's really stuck. That often helps.

We just went through the same thing with the points plate and case cover screws on the 78' KL 250. We first tried with a #3 Vessel Impacta JIS screwdriver and when that doesn't work we go straight to the left hand drill bits. Most of the time the corrosion is holding onto the back of the screw head and sometimes on the threads. Usually once the head is off relieving the tension on the threads the rest of the screw comes out with your fingers.

On the KL we drilled out 30 stuck case cover screws. None of them would come out with the impact. Every one of them unscrewed with the left hand drill bit just as the head was ready to pop off. We don't waste time anymore fighting with stuck screws. The left hand drill bits don't work every time but thinking about all the time we spent trying other ways to get stuck hardware out before we got out the left hand drill bits we could have built a couple more bikes. 8)

Not JIS, but I've had great luck with a snap on #3, 3/8" drive socket type bit. In my old craftsman battery impact the screw is often sticking to the bit after it comes out. On smaller screws I use a handheld impact driver.

A number of years ago, there was a member from the SE who was also a Vessel Tool dealer. He gave us better deals on Vessel Tools made in Japan.
I purchased this hand impact driver from him plus other stuff. This is model number 2500,it works great !

I have the same tool and the hammer end is actually a bit “mushroomed”. That and my 2.5 lbs. hammer rarely let me down.

Great suggestions.

I used to have an impact tool like that, but it has since disappeared. The Vessel Megadora driver is pretty good and has helped me out of a sticky situation or two before, but it isn't doing the job on this one. I think what I might do is hold off until the warm sunny PNW weather subsides and hit these screws with either a left hand drill bit or a screw removal bit once fall comes on strong.

An impact tool is essential for repair and maint on a vintage bike.  Although Vessel may manufacture the best [and most expensive] tools, my Great Neck has never let me down...

Aside from these pulse generator holding screws, I've been very lucky in this regard. Over the years I've owned this bike, just about every fastener (minus splitting cases) has been successfully removed without snapping and without the use of a manual impact tool. But it sure can't hurt to have one in the toolbox just in case.

I got some JIS bits for my impact driver from Amazon. They were inexpensive.

I have had success with JIS bits and a Motion Pro "T" handle. A lot of torque can be applied with this tool

These are the best JIS drivers I’ve come across.

My set has yet to let me down.

I ended up snagging a Vessel 4500-3-150 and the screws stood no chance. I love JIS drivers. Got the pulse generator off, greased up the advance mechanism, and adjusted timing a bit. Lo and behold, I'm fairly certain my bike needed that slight timing adjustment cause it idles noticeably smoother than it did even a few days ago.

So I think its worth having both an impact JIS driver and something that allows more rotational torque applied. In my case, luckily there was no need to cut or drill the screws out.

I also like my set of Vessel JIS screwdrivers:they call them 'cross points' rather than phillips  :D

Stev-o,does your Great Neck impact driver have JIS bits ?

It did not come with JIS bits but I purchased Vessel bits separately.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/153485438795?chn=ps&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&amdata=enc%3A1tjyBGKUZSUSE3KmKaZUY6Q5&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-117182-37290-0&mkcid=2&mkscid=101&itemid=153485438795&targetid=1584739241414&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9028253&poi=&campaignid=20388989034&mkgroupid=150315059974&rlsatarget=pla-1584739241414&abcId=9317247&merchantid=101685178&gclid=CjwKCAjwq4imBhBQEiwA9Nx1Bs89mddfvGReCV4K_A8xqfz79gbOLNYjOwJkWuqUXSOGbla6vQNTARoC6XAQAvD_BwE

I like those JIS bits, but want to purchase them from a USA stocking Vessel dealer: $20 shipping is outrageous.

Agreed, sorry.  Here...
