Cam Chain Tensioner and noise
« on: August 03, 2023, 07:00:28 AM »
1976 Honda 550F - Really excited, I about got it all together! All stock with 069A carbs rebuilt and dialed in, valves adjusted. The cam chain adjustment screw does not pop or move out much at all.  I have a crackling sound seems to come from top of motor.  How can I diagnose further? If cam chain and tensioner need replaced can I do it with motor still on bike?

Sounds like you need a shop manual.
New cam chain would require splitting the cases unless you want a chain with a link in it.

Before CB500/550 owners begin the camchain adjustment procedure, I advise them to watch this video, shot by René van Maanen of Honda4.nl. It gives you an idea of how the tensioner works and why you will not see the bolt turn when you loosen the locknut to let it adjust. It will move, but just a fraction. Also do not expect a wonderful humming engine after adjustment is made. On these models you will always hear the camchain.
Mind you, the vid does NOT show HOW to do the adjustment, it only demonstrates what goes on.

You can get a horrible ticking noise from a slight exhaust blow at the head, a "crack" however may be something wrong inside the cam cover, if not refitted properly valves can be bent and guides broken
