My 3rd sohc Chopper 1976 cb750F RIP754
« on: August 09, 2023, 01:19:36 PM »
This started life as a 76F many years ago. Traded for this barnfind project as I had missed it twice when it came up before. Whoever built it dropped a lot of work in it changing the rake and moving the kickstand for the 2 into 1. Recent PO tried to put a 78 harness in it without connecting the main ground, and had the coils reversed, so now that I heard it run I'm ordering parts.  Came with a F looking 550 caliper on it which took some figuring but as you can see in pic, the 550 pad can't grab the 750 rotor. Thinking I will switch the front caliper to a K style since I have a 73-76 k bracket and no F to compare the widths.  Seems to be a earlier motor with a replacement case as well. Looking forward to riding and putting some miles on this one... Thinking it needs a bigger tank, and more normal bars. Building this bike with our old friend 754 Frank in mind, as he was the sohc chopper authority up here in Canada. Curtis from Canada Rip Brother Frank.

Nicely detailed! I like the color (but then, blue is my fave color...). ;)

I probably have 3 or 4 of the 750 brake calipers, if you want one for postage? They probably need a new Oring in them, been sitting dry for many years, now.

The caliper swing arm on the 750 also is different than the 550, so be sure you get both or ID which you have now...

Thanks for the offer hondaman but I have a few bikes parted and a new caliper/piston on the way from 4into1. The 16 rear wheel is stock 76f as well as the swingarm. I had some fun finding m8 by 1.25 bleeders that weren't 20$ found out honda civics with abs 1995 were the same and 2$.
Had what I thought were new intake rubbers but can't seem to make em work. has 16212-300-305 (2/3) and 16211-300-305 on the 1/4. Seeming like they may be k0? Anyways when place correctly as per the notably different end moulds  the 2/3 are super close together, Can only get the carbs on by flipping the 2/3s backwards and it doesn't allow everything to sit flush. These rubbers have different moulds on each side. I think these are 657b carbs roundtops. pics...

So I cleaned up some oem insulators and threw them on just to prove a point. They fit perfect and equal. So buyer beware there are some cheap intake boots not properly moulded as I seem to have discovered. Also noticed how soft they are and question their ability to up a rack of keihins  on a chopper with no airbox support. Yet the ebay seller is claiming they are 100% good when in fact they are not. I even went with a medium price as the cheapest were 24 bucks shipped.

Aftermarket insulators often crack within a year on regular 550s, so an unsupported chopper application I would expect less. Some even failed due to fuel, hopefully those are no longer being sold.
It is best to just bite the bullet and buy from a discount Honda dealer like South Sound Honda of Olympia Washington.
They aren’t perfect, as HondaMan has pointed out, but they beat the crap out of flushing your money down the toilet with aftermarket ones that won’t last much more than a year if they last that long.

We always make a support for the back of the carbs when the airbox is removed.

Decided to go the wintergreen/xylene route with oem insulators. Got the motor touched up and a "stainless cycle" labelled and bagged allen kit installed. On this 76 F the kit was ok, had at least one wrong/missing in the valve cover, and a wrong one in the shifter cover plus 6 or 7 left overs? The stator and ignition ones were too short for my aftermarket covers. Luckily I had some extras I got from fastner warehouse at hand. I had already ordered a complete kit from James Spillane, but it took over a month or so to get everything headed here. If he doesn't respond I'm pretty sure he has a new email that's not on his old website.  Been a lil sidetracked as I snagged a couple lil bikes I couldn't refuse. A 77 cb125s single and a 72 cb175ss twin. Already got the 6volt 77 up and running...

Snagged some neat old Dual K&N's I'm gonna try. Plan to add flashing to cover the top and side for more of a air box effect and for rain.  New chain just went on this eve, just a lil wiring, a few misplaced bolts and bleed the frt brake before it's ready for gas. When installing the chain i found the rear caliper was really loose in the stay arm like it was missing a bushing or too small of a bolt. Curious if it's intentional to allow for swing arm movement, as It doesn't seem to move much with the axle nut tight.

Without any pictures or explanation it is impossible to answer your question. Loose, shouldn't be. My suggestion is to look up that particular schematic in a 75/76 parts book.
