Vacuum Gauge set
« on: August 29, 2023, 07:17:03 AM »
I just bought this factory Honda vacuum gauge set off Ebay.
Not sure why they have adjustable valves on them other than possibly closing off  individual gauges for 2 or 3 cylinder engines.
Are they necessary for synchronization of my carbs after reassembly?

They are for dampening the wild movements of the dial needles.

Before using them to sync carbs you might want to test each gauge to make sure that they all read the same..

That’s what the adjustment is for. Hook them all together and attach to one cylinder on a running engine. Tweak them so they all read the same number. Now you can go to all four cylinders…..

The valves are for dampening the needle fluctuations.

There is possibly a screw on the back of each dial that you adjust to get them to read the same, when they all are connect to a single vacuum source.

This is not correct! You can not connect all 4 to one port for calibration, not at the same time. One after the other is possible however or use a stabil, not pulsating source. In that case you can connect all four at the same time.

The valves are to be used to smooth out the pulsing of the gauge needles

I used a vacuum pump - from my pond aerator - to verify/calibrate my set.

No, I'm pretty sure he means to calibrate his gages, not the carbs.

Exactly.  I built my set myself and there was a time when I doubted one of them.  The stable vacuum resolved that.

You’re telling your age Dave.

That means id have to get the moth balls out of one of the old L82s in the barn to sync my gauges…I use a set of refrigeration gauge hooked to a vacuum pump to bleed the vac down to 20” as the source to balance the for gauge readings.
