Question about Spark Plug Wires and Caps
« on: September 03, 2023, 07:17:27 AM »
My 1970 CB750 K0 has Accel coils, Accel plug wires and caps. I don't know the exact number of the coils without removing the tank. The wires are Accel 8.8mm EMI suppression graphite core. The plug caps appear to have 5000 ohm resistor built into the cap. I am using D7EA plugs. Should these coils, wires, and caps be used? If the coils and wires are OK should the resistor caps with the built-in resistor be used?

Graphite core wires often cause problems. Abstain.

D7EA are a range hotter than what we usually see. I have used them when fouling plugs is an issue but I think they came in the bike when I got it.
I'm not sure why we can't use suppression wires, especially when the old plug caps were 8 to 10K ohms. I have them on my aftermarket ignition (Gerex) but have not racked any significant miles of experience with them. The previous owner however, ran a lot of carburetor and cam and he left them on for decades of drag racing and hot street riding.

I am not enthused about the graphite wires. Anyone have recommendations for wires and where to get them?
What about the caps? If I change wires and go to wire wires what caps should I use?

NGK caps, I hope that's what you have since they stopped making them. Tractor Supply used to sell a set of stranded core copper wires for tractors. I think napa also sells solid core wire sets.

Accel used to make a solid copper core 8 mm yellow wire, but it’s been a while since I saw it for sale. I’ll look to see if I have a roll.

Thanks guys.  So would I change the caps to non-resistor caps??
