I just take my bike to the local exhaust guru, tell him what I want and a few days later take my bike with new pipe home(after parting with some dollars) if he makes a jig for it the price goes down

I must make clear, none of this specialty stuff is available here in the wilderness. It's what I can do myself or nothing.
If it's worth doing at all it's worth over-doing.

many places carry bends and header kits for building your own headers, would be a simple thing to buy a few bends then weld them up.
or buy a header kit that has a few different tubes to weld them up.

Heck, for that matter, look into cheap aftermarket headers, slice and dice.

https://www.headersbyed.com/mandrelb.htm

has bends, I've seen them cheaper other places, but that was the first place I found

I have been running the "G" grind cam and I love it.  It idles like crap but runs like a beast.  If you have the 836 already I would highly recommend using the performance cam, and while you are at it go with a Dyna coil and pickup.

Its not a SOHC, but I used the aftermarket header pipes that came with the bike (CB 450) and to my surprise, a set of H-D Big twin pipes has the correct bends for what I was looking for. I welded them together and cut the ends for the slash look. The stock H-D chrome exhaust covers worked great also.
 Daniel

Last headers I built were for a mustang2, used three different of the shelf headers cut and welded to fit the chassi.
motor was a 351w sitting 6 inches back from normal, with a stick shift and several frame mods.

old 750 had a tri-y pipe built up out of cycle pipes and car headers

Currently have a buddy that works for an oem header builder (builds exhaust etc for Ford mazda) so occasionaly have him drag home stainless tubes with various bends. Only drawback is I'm limited to bends they're running at the time.

DIY Tubing Bending
« Reply #37 on: April 11, 2007, 02:08:35 PM »
Dunno if this would help anyone, but I watched my dad and his buddies bend steel tubing before.

They stopped up one end of the tube with a wooden plug and then filled up the tubing with sand (very dry sand, otherwise steam can build up and go *boom*). They kept packing the sand in there with a form and a hammer until no more could fit and then hammered in another wooden plug. Then they heated where they needed the bend, with a torch until they could make their bend. The packed sand inside prevented the tubing from collapsing.

gotta love DIY backyard mechanics. .  . .he he  ;D

I have a built thread going but I hav'nt added to it lately "Re-start project cafe"

It was much easier to build than I thought it would be. I just had some bends made at local shop, cut to fit, and weld.

The pipe is 1-1/2 ID so it is very large for a 550 and I am sure it will breath well ,and with a little tuning sound wicked. The mufflers were an after thought, so they may need to be packed with some glass or opened up, time will tell
