Topic: Really's Kid got his first bike

My dad (Really?) and I picked up this '73 CB750 yesterday to build for my first bike. 

I will need to find a stock airbox.  Previous owner said it ran fine with pods but my dad said we should get a stock airbox.  Hoping to find one.  We are in DFW, willing to pick up.  I've already been going though Hondamans book.

He has some work to do for sure!  I am excited for him and I can work with him to get it done. 

Still need to get the carbs off and cleaned, and see what is going on there.  Found a Dyna S ignition under the points cover.  i'll need to figure out the screws for the controller on the handlebar.  Tank wasn't too bad on the inside.  So far, it looks like a good start for a build.

What is that sticking out of the hole in the back of the case? I've seen that posted before but can't find it.

Nice! I tried pulling it out but it wouldn't come out. I'll try a bit harder. My luck, we picked up the same bike that I saw something like this long ago. :O

I'd caution against yanking that out. You really need to understand why it's there. If for some catastrophic reason it pierced the case, you're looking at a full teardown.

Well, it was an Allen wrench. That hole goes through the to the top of the case like a weep hole. I feel so much better, hah!

If the orientation of that hole is from the rear of the case, foreward, then upwards, the only thing it will do is weep oil onto your rear tire. That is highly undesirable. I suggest you really (no pun intended) think it through.

I think I will be good there. I have that same hole on the '75 750 here as well.

Hey Kid...congrats on getting your bike!  I know your Dad [Really?!!], we rode together several years ago, I'm down near Austin.

Sorry, I dont have an airbox but have a lot of other parts. Hit me up with whatever else you may need.

We picked up some fuel line and line for the bowls today.  Fuel line price wasn't as bad as I thought it would be at the dealer.  Yesterday we picked up vinegar and coke to clean the tank (It wasn't bad), some bolts from lowes and those welding tip tool things to poke through all the carb stuff (I like those).  Got two carbs cleaned, working on the other two.  Found some larva in the carbs, sorry, no pictures,  lol. 

Still need to pick up a throttle tube and the push/pull cables.  Lots of other things to go through on this things.  Some electical, turn signals, tail light and a lot of cleaning. I will need to go through everything. 

I'm not fond of the brat seat.  Been on the hunt for something else which is slightly annoying.  That welded in hoop in the back might rule out a stock seat pan with something on top.  The seat pan i have for a 77/78 just doesn't look right on there.  Seat lock bracket is gone but the frame seat hinges are still there.

Turns out that allen wrench came with the Dyna S ignition in the points cover. The PO left it on top of the engine case and it slid back into, I guess, that drainage hole.  Sounds good to me. 

Anyway, got the carbs cleaned/mounted, new battery, cleaned up a lot of the wiring in the side cover and a couple other places. Glad I had the old harness from momma's bike, parts of it has come in handy.    It won't start by the button but will kick over and run - a little smokey though. It's been sitting a while for sure.  Cleaned the contacts in the controller and reflowed some solder there but no start from the button.  WIll take apart the starter solinoid and do some cleaning.  Jumping it with a screwdriver works. 

The Kid is getting a good education on these bike for sure.  I keep him real dirty with grime, lots of hands on.

Just a small update...
Got an airbox, adjusted valve lash again, added NGK 5ohm caps (originals were between 9k to 11k Ohms) and set the timing correctly on the Dyna S (PO had it waaayyy off).  Got her idling at about 1k.  She is a bit smokey though, bluish grey white.  I don't know the history other that it has been sitting a while.  I know it might be like that until the rings break in again.  I still need to do a compression and/or leak down test.  The clock says 48k so it probably needs some more work, valve guides and rings n such.  oh well...  This is starting to look expensive!!!!

I like Andy Mechanics videos, funny and informative. Especially when educating the kid.

Run it for a 100 miles and give it an oil/filter change. So many times they just come back on their own. Rings clean the bores and seat nicely, valves reseat themselves, jets and idle circuits benefit from some clean fuel! You might be surprised how well it runs in a few days!

We have a ‘75 GL1000 that sat for 25 years. It actually blew off its rusty exhaust system when we first started it up. Oil was a 50/50 mix of Shell Rotella and Autotrans fluid. Oil came out black and compression was low. It’s got 12K more on it now, running better than ever!

You're right, will give it some time on the road after it is roadworthy. It's running rotella now. We discussed moving to the front end. Needs tubes (bent and rusted), steering head bearings, brake reservoir/caliper rebuilt (not releasing), handlebars (bent), gauges dented. Still need to make a  seat and go through the rear end/swingarm.

So, it's been a while since an update.  Life has been consuming our time.

We have done a number of things.  Forks were bent so we replaced them.  Stev-o hooked us up with a speedometer drive gear.. Thanks again sir!  Did some paint, cleaning up, new controllers, controllers, tapered steering bearings, push/pull cables, speedometer cable, Joe's smooth side covers and some other things that I can't remember right now. 

I used a gauge bracket I picked up from a member here during the rally that didn't work on momma's bike.  Got the gauges tucked pretty good.  I added some joker fork tube caps that I had during momma's build that I didn't use. 

Electrical stuff is still being a pain, I think a new harness will be coming.  Today for the kid, it is for paint stripping, already got most of the dents out, and maybe a little body filler.

Paint Ideas are white with red rising sun and red Honda logo while giving it a red paint patina, not rust.  Hope that turns out well. LOL

I don't like the brake resevior, need to figure something out for that.
