I missed an exit
« on: August 29, 2023, 06:03:46 AM »
On the PA turnpike 76.  It was not entirely my fault, there was a semi next to me and it did not feel safe to dart for the exit.

Anyway, missing an exit on a toll road is one of the worst roads to do it.  I had to go all the way from Bedford to Alleghany tunnel to make a u-turn.  It added 50 miles to my 220 miles trip.

Live and learn  ;D

Alleghany in WV is on my list of places I want to visit on a bike. Alas it's going to have to wait till next year. It's about 5 hours in a southern direction for me.

Always best to err on the side of caution, the alternative may not have been a good thing. Ride safe!

I am going to Pa. in the am to look at another project bike, but I will be avoiding every major highway expect for a short span of Int. 81 in Virginia.  I hate that damn Pennsylvania Turnpike, one of the worst roads to travel on I have ever experienced......

I was visiting my son in State College, PA for an extended weekend.  99 covers most of the travel in PA and 99 is as nice as an express way could be, with far views and low traffic.

But to get to 99 from VA you need to take 81 or 522 followed by 70 and 76 turnpike.

I think 81 is the worst of the whole trip with the heaviest semitruck traffic day and night.

I missed an exit on Autobahn many years ago when going home on my K6, then 836 outside Munich.

It took over 80km to find an exit sign to a small village so I could turn back.

A little bit stress to get back on track with an extra refueling. Reserve kicked in before 150 km when cruising 160-180kmh

Another time I continued forward for extra sightseeing via an other town until I reached the correct road again.

Easy to miss the sign when a tall truck is close at front covering the signs until too late.

Did same mistake when going to Naples airport Italy missing the exit and had to drive thru close city  center crowded morning traffic in 4 lanes despite road only had  3.
Magical wonder I found the correct way to find the airport. Returned car and checked in.

Never have a tall truck covering the road signs in front of you.

GPS with fresh maps a better help these days.

In the mid 70's we were leaving Ocean City on our K4 750 heading back to PA. the traffic was heavy and I asked my wife to watch for the Atlantic city expressway, after we had gone on for far too long, I stopped and got out the map.  She said she saw the sign for Atlantic city but it didn't say expressway. By then it was as good to keep going as it was to backtrack, so we saw some new towns. L0L.

Reminds me how we were camping in Versailles, France and my wife was reading from a guide book:

"It is not recommended to drive in Paris for visitors".

Sure enough next morning we were speeding down an express way in heavy traffic - on Honda 750 - with a truck on our rear wheel.  We were to meet a friend by Notre Dame who would let us stay the night before heading back to Prague.

Last time I drove anything in Europe was 2012 and I don't think I want to ever do it again.  I am used to the space of American roads and streets.

In 1973 I rode (with my 1st wife) from IL down to Grand Canyon via Colorado. After hiking to the bottom and back up (a killer of a hike!) and a side trip to Phoenix (don't do that in August on a bike, BTW...) we headed back up thru Utah toward Yellowstone. Well, the interstate north thru Utah was only done in pieces, like 10 to 30 mile stretches, so I was on-off the 4-lane and thru the small towns. After passing thru a tiny town with no open gas stations (it was Sunday) and having 1/2 tank still aboard, we headed north and came onto a new stretch of the 4-lane. But, this stretch turned out to be 85+ miles long with NO exits finished yet! When it finally reverted to 2-lane, it was 2 miles from the next town when...sputter, sput...coasting...stop. And, I was on Reserve already. But, since she was there I had her help me lay the bike over onto the right footpeg (after removing the backpack and right saddlebag) to get that last dribble that gets trapped in this particular bike's Reserve-for-Reserve tank design, and rolled into the first gas station, just as it died the second time.

Whew.  8)

Running on the last, single fume  :).

I done the leaning trick with the K0 few times.  The reserve position was not working for quite some time - till I got my act together and replaced it with aftermarket.

The sidecar is in the same boat.  Not only it makes her drink like a sailor on shore leave, once the level is low I am getting no gas from the left side of the tank.   I made it a habit to reset the trip meter when I fill up.

I remember one family trip from Czechoslovakia to East Germany.  The last pump before the border was closed, the gas pump was coin operated and we were searching our pockets for evey mark and pfenig to feed the pump and get few liters of gas out of it.

Done the lean bike trick too, making bike to the gas station. That was many years ago. The first year or 2 owning it.
I always know how much left in tank and refill in time after that.

I'm old enough to remember gasless Sundays. We had just bought our first house and wanted to finish painting a room so we could move into it. I jumped on my nearly new cb500 and headed for the Peoria Sears store that said they had the paint. It was a 45 mile ride or so. I had forgotten the tank wasn't full because I liked to start it and warm it up in the winter.
At any rate, I was part way back when it went on reserve. I set the throttle at 45 and got tucked in over the tank with my feet on the back pegs. I stopped at a closed gas station and did the bike lean trick. It made it home without missing a beat but the next day it wouldn't start.
And they didn't have the paint when I got there.

That trip reminds me: during the gas shortage of the 1970s I went from IL to CO on my 750. On the way out I had no gas problems, but on the way back, all the stations were closed in each town. When I got to Kansas City there was a cut-rate station just closing up, and all the cars drove away. I was on Reserve already, about 30 miles, and in trouble! When all the cars and the attendant were gone, I went to all 10 gas pumps and lifted their hoses high to dribble in what was left to my tank. I got 45 more miles out of KC with that when I found a little town with a gas & grocery store who just got a delivery, filled up and headed home. Lucky day!

My little Honda's fuel tank is made out of thin steel and of course I have no gas gauge.
I have gotten good at 'gauging' how much fuel I have while at a stop just by lightly slapping the sides of the tank and listen to how it resonates. I have also leaned it over almost all way to get the last few ounces(I thought)of gasoline to get 'over the hump' to squeeze the last couple miles out of it before getting to a station;a Full Tank of 'fresh' is best.
The quality of "gasoline" is just So Poor here in Ca. that I can only depend on the gas I pump into the tank to last about a week before it starts pinging and I lose power from the 'mix' of trash fuel in there. I Really miss ethanol-free gasoline.  ::)

Prokop,I've been on the Pa. Turnpike/76 a few times before when I lived near Pittsburgh from 13'-17' and it's not difficult to miss an exit on there;it's a boring road to drive.

One of my first rides in Japan, I was on a small highway and suddenly there was a fork in the road. Sign pointing left was something like... "Turtle Hill" and right was something so local I couldn't read it. Nothing at all like "This way to Kyoto" or "That way to Tokyo". Both were clover-leafs that lead to tollways. Totally nothin' nowhere places that only rice-farmer Jo ever heard of. There was no shoulder, so I quickly pulled over between the line and the Jersey barrier, and yanked out my brand new cell phone (the old, pre-flip type).

"Honey. I'm on the freeway..."
"Did you crash!?!"
"No, but there's something about Turtle Hill... and some... village. Which way do I go?"
"How should I know?"
"But...you're from here!"
"I'm from the city. We use trains. How would I know about Japanese highways?"
(Click)

I took a right. It worked out.

I missed an exit on Autobahn many years ago when going home on my K6, then 836 outside Munich.

It took over 80km to find an exit sign to a small village so I could turn back.

I missed my exit on an Autobahn also, many years ago.

Luckily I was heading to Ausfahrt and the next exit led to there also.
