Chain Oil / Wax Options?
« on: September 20, 2023, 09:02:01 AM »
This topic must've come up many times, but there's so much info on this forum, it's like looking for a lock washer in a gravel driveway...

What are you using to lube your motorbike's drive chain?
Last bike I rode was shaft-driven. Before that, I used PJ1 chain lube.
Seems like a lot more options are available now, and I'm not ashamed to say I'm confused by all the choices.

Wet...Dry... Wax... Paste? I just want to ride my Honda without getting oil all over my leg and fender, and I prefer not to spend $20 on one can if I can help it.

For those who used 80w. and modern sprays, what's your opinion?

Yes Motul is good. I lube the chain after a good ride, when it's hot. Next day the lube has dried or whatever you call the solvent evaporating. Still get some spots on the rim and fender but really not much at all if - I'm not using way too much.

I use a Castrol product in a spray can. Used sparingly it doesn’t make much mess and seems to hang on OK. I also use it on a hot chain, then let it cool.

Honda has a good chain cleaner spray can that is lower priced than similar chain cleaners, I think it goes for $9 a pop.
I've been using PJ1 until my can is used up...
FortNine did some pretty good comparison reviews of cleaners and lubes a while back...
Find them on YouTube.

Motul  does make good product.

Thanks folks.
Motul seems well liked. Honda brand? Might have to try that just as a Honda-nerd...fan.

Later on this evening I came across a comparison video, testing 55 types of chain oil. It was quite long. The old standard 80w gear oil made it to the "finals" and it did rather well in most of the tests.

[...] I also use it on a hot chain, then let it cool.
No need to do that. Read somewhere they measured the chains temperature, right after a race. It was lower than your body temperature.
