CR750/CB750 Race videos? Links?
« on: September 23, 2023, 10:24:25 pm »
Been searching Youtube for racing footage for 1970's vintage CB750/CR750 bikes racing. Apparently my search-fu sucks. I keep finding videos of guys showing off their builds, but no racing, or guys on 80's Hondas at a drag strip.

It doesn't matter if it's a particularly new video, I'd just like to see some circuit races with CB750K or F / CR750 in them. Watched a couple P.O.V. videos via the forum here. Other bikes, but still awesome stuff. Would somebody share some links of CB750 races?

I saw one once of a parking lot at a motorcycle race, apparently in Japan and all you could see were cb750's. Unfortunately, I never found it again.

Don R: Not to go off on a tangent, but...
The only time I saw a bunch of CB750s in Japan, there were 25 to 30 of them, and they were a22holes. I tried talking to a couple, saying エエ単車乗っているやん? "Nice bike man" and so on, but they just made a scoffing sound and walked off -- which is completely uncharacteristic of people over there, espeically adult motorcycle riders who are generally super nice. I could already speak Japanese by then, so it wasn't a language thing. Could have been that they didn't like white dudes, but more than likely they just thought they were tough. (Talked like yakuza too so I think they thought of themselves as 1%ers) When they left, they were rappin' up the throttles and riding wheelies, doing burnouts, so I guess I should have been impressed.

Having said that, their bikes were seriously sweet, hopped up reverse-imports, with oodles of parts I can't afford. Nothing like the backyard rescues I'd be riding. The guys I rode with rode a mish-mash of different bikes, all in great shape, but there were quite a few Z1 and Z2 riders in the group. (End tangent)

Thanks for the link! This is a more edited version of one I'd seen. I like how it's his daily driver. I'd sort of like to take a bike to such a place, but my bike just barely made it to rideable. :)

Funny. I couldn't find diddly, but your link lead to other videos like this one of a race aboard a CB750K2:

Exciting race at Tsukuba! Much better to watch from this angle than to go to the track IMO.

I went to Suzuka once and paid $50 (5000jpy) just to get in and sit on the hot grass... about 36-37C all day.  Only saw the bikes now and then as they shot by where I was sitting, and only for a millisecond. My ride to and from Suzuka from Osaka was the best part. Second best was seeing a family of macaques at the campground I stayed at...but a bit scary. Those things are WAY bigger in person.

Thanks for the link. Great stuff.

My big brother was in Japan around 1960, he owned a couple bikes there and was in his air force base motorcycle club. A lot of the bikes were hand me downs from other guys getting transferred elsewhere. One day they got to ride on the Honda test drag strip, he said it was only one lane and about 3 feet wide. He remembered a female riding a fast Honda wearing a full set of pink leathers. he always wondered if she was related to the Honda family.
He had a bad motorcycle wreck and got sent home after partial recovery. His belongings were shipped back, still doesn't know what happened to his other bike. He has the taillight lens and gas cap from the wreck, the gas cap was a replacement and has a PBR logo in the exact center on the inside. I always wanted to go to Japan with him, the closest we got was Dayton Ohio to the Air Force Museum and his last duty station. There's a good chance the WB50 in the museum is one of the ones he worked on in Japan.

That's an awesome story. Even cooler than he lived through his wreck and came home to tell about it. 3 feet wide?! Japanese roads are narrow as heck, but 3 feet. Just big enough I guess. I wonder if it was Yokota Air Base? My uncle was stationed there. (Dad's younger brother)

My Dad was in Japan too, but in 1945. He was a sailor on the Missouri. Different circumstances of course.
My wife is from Osaka. Her grandfather's machine shop was actually bombed during the war. It's quite a crazy genealogy for my kids.

Try searching for the 1970 Daytona race where Dick Mann won on a factory CR750, which is what made the CR famous.

Yes, I have seen that race televised and was pretty cool. I was born in 69' so of course I had to watch it years after the fact.
One thing that I like about that race is seeing the gear they wore. I wonder it was as thin as it looks.

Try googling " Honda CB 750 Corey Forde" and watch the Phillip Island classic
OH yes the leathers have changed ! the last time I went through scrutineering 7 years ago the scrutineer said " you have to be joking" after I showed him my 1974 Waldon Miller leathers. He consulted the chief scrutineer before he grudgingly accepted them. ( had the odd patch on which didn't help)

That video ROCKED. I was excited from the green light. Here are my cheeky reactions:

-- 1200cc isn't a CB750, it's almost 2 CB750s. One for each foot. Does he ride it like a barbarian warrior, reins in one fist and brandishing a sword in the other? That bike is incredible!

-- As a garden variety 736 rider, normally seated in this position, all I could think of is "Why is my bike making this weird sound?!" (Because my bike isn't a 1200cc racer)

-- "Are those other guys racing?" This Corey person isn't racing, he's riding alone around some other guys who are acting as obstacles. At the start, I wondered why he had to wait until the pace car went...then I understood. Look at that thing go!!!

-- During the straightaway, it was like watching a horror movie "Oh my god, he's going to get that guy! Turn around! The monster is coming! Ruuuun!"

Fantastic. Thanks!

RE: Waldon Miller suits. $1500. MM mm mm. I'll remember that next time I complain about gear costs. Cripes.

I suppose they don't allow vintage helmets though, right?

Oh hey there, I read your post about BUB (2014 but I wasn't here then). I enjoyed the talk about using the "A" frame to be able to get the head cover off. Who knew? YOU, apparently.

I don't actually know if my current bike will go past 100. This summer is the first time I've had it on the freeway. It's been a long and hard road getting if from P.O.S. to now. lol I did sneak a few 80-90mph bits in there... "testing" but at around 80-85 it started to feel a bit "slippery" feeling in the rear... almost like I was getting a flat tire. Only thing I didn't change back there was shocks.

Thanks for that. I'm enjoying the videos right now.
It's funny how it sounds like a CB750 while also sounding so much "more".
How many rpm is that?

I typically shift my dragbikes at 10,000 rpm. My guess is if i put any one of the bikes on a dyno, my peak horsepower numbers would come in much lower. I probably leaving ET on the table. One day I'm going to schedule a dyno visit to see exactly where the limit lays.  Enjoy the videos.  Some are of my Honda's but i also put up some of the Kawasaki dragbukes i race.

Hmm...how about your swingarm pivot bushings?
I still rebuild them to less-than-0.0008" clearance with custom-fitted Oilite bronze bushings, both raceworthy and Lifetime Warranty...it makes the bike feel like it lost 50 lbs somewhere.
Tapered steering head bearings? The ones from Allballs are great: try to get the ones they sell from Sweden instead of the Japanese ones, better metallurgy.
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

Dragracer: These videos are super. I think I've been waiting for the go-pro to fully enjoy watching someone race. Drag races are pretty cool from the side, but nothing like this P.O.V.. Thanks for sharing these.

Hondaman: I've greased the fitting on the swingarm, and didn't check the bushings. I suppose I should assume that the steering head bearings have never been changed too. I have added both to my to-do list. Thank you.
