550cb tac problem
« on: October 03, 2023, 08:10:41 AM »
Well I just finished my 550 duel disc conversion and now a tac issue just starts w/o any warning.
It has started to win right from idle. And it is loud enough to rivil engine noise.
My question is -
Is it shot or worth trying to open it for repair.
Should it go to a shop
Or do I just have to find one.

Mine has a green face. A lot I see have blue faces.
Mine is in great outside shape.

My CB750 K6 speedo started to make loud screaming the first year back on the road.
I took it off, upside down and lubed the hole for cable. A mix of lithium oil spray and another oil spray. Not too much, just a few light spray.
Let it sit like that for an hour or so and back on bike. No oil leak inside and still working fine about 45000 km later.

Well it is worth a try to lubricate. As said, I did lube the cable by adding TriFlow to one end until it showed at the other end, but not the connection, which I believe you are indicating that getting some grease up there will help free 'sticky' parts
Well, my whole unit is vibrating,so seems it could use some internal lub.
My gauge certainly looks very good from the outside, but does have the age to the inside.
Now the question of repair.
If the unit does not stop making noise is prying it open a viable option or are they usually gone when they start doing things like this and you may as well save your time and look for another unit.

No responses.
Again tac, not speedo. So, is opening one up worth the effort or are they usually gone when this occurs.
Any good repair guys? I've contacted several biz that advertise units for sale w/o good results. Seems used ones are the only alternative. But a used one could be right back with the same issue after being bought

Again tac, not speedo.

It's the same type of mechanism. ;) The bushing that supports the part that spins when the cable turns it can get dried out, and needs to be lubed. You've already been given two methods to do this without tearing the instrument apart. Here is a third method that worked for me once: with the cable unscrewed from the tach, take a small plastic cup, like the cap off a can of WD40, fill it with oil, and prop it up under the instrument with the threaded part where the cable screws on submerged. Leave it like that for a while, and every now and then turn the inside a few times to help spread the oil up into the dry bushing.

Ok
Seems the part is worth saving.
