Looking at my options for painting my tank. Not sure if I want to do it myself or take it to a shop and get it done by a professional.

I’ve been reading into this VMR paint and wanted to hear opinions on the rattle can before spending $150+. I plan to do the flake sunrise orange and it requires base coat, mid coat, and clear coat. If you’ve done this before tips and pictures are appreciated!

I used it before the company was [re]named VMR, although I've forgotten their earlier name (it was something like "CT70 Paints.com"). The Candy Gold Flake kit is a detailed 3-paint sequence, plus the basecoat (4 layers plus clear topcoat, in all). If you're decent at painting it comes out pretty well: the bike on the cover of my book was done using their paints, on my patio, in the Fall.

...although...the 1st time I did the side covers, just as I finished spraying the clear top coat (that was the  5th layer) a swarm of gnats came outta nowhere and kamikazied themselves straight into the paint. This made about a dozen tiny black streaks like a fine pencil mark, about 1/2" long each, where they dissolved! I had to start over...

ALL paint work requires quality prep work for a quality outcome. The “spraying” part requires less skill for more simple schemes. And then, finish work can turn an average paint job into a high quality paint job.

So, if you are determined enough and willing to be patient, do the prep right. Then spray it. Then wet sand and buff it out and you should be plenty proud of the outcome.

Worst case, you spend $150 and a few days to find out if you can do it. If not, you end up taking it to a pro. $150 and some time is a cheap skill building lesson in my book.

Agreed! I’ve done some paint work on my other projects in the passed so I have the confidence in doing it myself again. Just wasn’t sure about the VMR products as I’ve read mixed reviews. I think I’ll give it a go.

I did it with a spray gun: it is a "detail gun" from Harbor Freight, which sprays air first and then paint with a progressive trigger, very nice for a cheapie. I did it that way because I wanted to do all 4 layers and here in super-dry Colorado I only would get 5-7 minutes between coats: I couldn't clean the gun that fast, so I bought 4 [cheap] guns. I practiced a little with one of them first to see how it worked (sprayed on some slick enamel paper on a cardboard box) and then cleaned that one to use for the primer coat. When it was all done, THEN I cleaned the guns (then the bugs appeared...).

The result is the bike on the cover and title page of my book.

One question.. the tank sticker decal. Did you clear coat over that?

I am actually shooting this one this morning.  Picture is with 2nd coat of 2k clear, at least one or two more to go.  The decals on this one had some white fraying on the edges that showed up during application, nothing I can do now but live with it. Yes shoot the clear after your decals have cured fully, about a week.  I speed the process somewhat by leaving the tank sit in the sun a few days.  Mark the fancy painting rig is actually a paper towel holder my Wife threw out.  I put a piece of metal across the top with zip ties.  Another tip keep your table surface wet and I also add a little bug spray to keep the flies and nats somewhat at bay......

I truly enjoy the process and upon close inspection you can spot the flaws, but at least you can say you did the work.  My favorite is still the emerald green peanut tank and fender for my XS bobber, that was my attempt at two tone paint and masking off the lines.  Damn proud of that one....

That looks great britman.  Is the base or clear coat the 2k paint?

You can get by with 1k clear on the side covers and other areas, but always 2k clear on the tank.  Once cured it will not be harmed by gasoline.  Learned that one the real hard way.  I use nothing but Spray Max clear, always had great luck with it...

I used Spray Max on my brown K2.
Their 2k clear is very hard and durable. A little bit thick despite I warmed up the cans before.

Yamiya body kits only have the 2 hole so I had to paint a 3 hole to match.

Used vmr rattle cans and it was bang on. One too many squirts of candy and it’s too dark so it’s all about patients. I checked it 3-4 times in the sun for the correct shading.

Attached is a pic of a two hole.

If you look closely at the photos I posted above you can see the three hole.

I gather the two hole are prone to cracking (the reason Honda switched to 3 holes)  and I also had 3 hole mounting hardware.

Were you able to get away with one can for the base and mid coats? Or did you have to buy more than one? How many coats of each? Trying to figure out how much I’ll need before putting an order in
