Snow Tires?
« on: April 04, 2024, 02:59:44 PM »
+24 hours of non stop, heavy, wet snow. More than 12” so far; will this sh1t ever stop? Got me wasting time on the internet. Here’s what I found:

In some places in the world, such as the Province of Quebec, in Canada, there are laws about winter tires. In Quebec, you must have certified winter tires on your vehicle if you want to use it on public roads during the winter.

The problem is that not all motorcycle winter tires are recognized by police and governments. In North America, we use the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMS) standard. While Heidenau makes three models of motorcycle winter-specific tires, they are not 3PMS-certified, therefore these would not count as “winter tires” as far as the province of Quebec is concerned. The Regulation respecting the use of tires specifically designed for winter driving also applies to motorcycles. Therefore, from December 1 to March 15, you must have your motorcycle equipped with winter tires that meet established standards and are in good condition in order to drive it on the roads in Quebec.

Anlas, a motorcycle tire manufacturer also offers winter tires, including one that is 3PMS certified. These tires would be allowed on Quebec roads during the winter.

...and then you can use them for hillclimbs after the snow is gone?
:D

I just read more about their tires. They make some very interesting stuff, but NO dealers in North America.

I can't imagine wanting to ride the grit covered, frost heaved, potholed roads here in the winter with any tire!

We have winter tire laws in BC too, but motorcycles excluded. Oct1-April 30th, it’s been such a mild winter here I’ve swapped my wife’s VW golf’s tires already and my SUV’s winters were on 3rd season and are pretty much done as winters now!

I’d kinda like to try Dunlop’s Mutant tire on my KTM. I’ve ridden dirt roads on Pirelli SuperCorsa’s on this bike, so having something with more than a passing nod to tread may increase my grip on some of the non paved roads in BC!

I put a new set of these Continentals on the Varadero. Very quiet and lots of grip on pavement and outstanding on gravel roads.

On our dirt bikes, when we want to go snow riding, we just buy a bunch of 1/4-3/8" (really any size shorter than the thickness of your knobby) self tappng sheet metal screws.  Screw em in a nice even pattern.  A fresh one will wheelie on solid, smooth ice.  You will still be slidin around on wet snow over rutted frozen hard pack but its fun...guessing this is not DOT approved for road use lol
If it works good, it looks good...

David…. The front is a Continental TKC70 110/90R 19. The matching TKC70 for the rear comes in 150/70R 17. The rear I ordered (and in the picture above) is the TKC “ROCKS” version. Slightly more aggressive tread, same size. Still very quiet and smooth on pavement. They really suit the Varadero and the mixed roads in my neighbourhood.
