After many years riding a 1981 BMW R100, I am used to riding along between 3 and 4K rpm.When accelerating through the gears, I may go as high as 5K. Now that I'm riding my new to me 1974 cb750, I am doing the same or maybe 500rpm higher in the same situations. Is this too low for the cb750? It just feels excessive to use higher rpms based on my long time previous experience.

Too low. Your Airhead had 2 big slugs to move only. These motors have 4 (tiny by comparison) pistons, inline and rev much higher naturally. I know your nature being a long time BMW rider, but open that throttle and discover where your CB really shines. It’s perfectly suited for it and safe.

I rev it a bit higher on occasions, but generally use exactly the same revs you describe.

The fun starts at 6000rpm. They are made to rev, not slug along at 3500rpm.
