Do I really want another project?

Do I really want another project?

My interests have shifted over the last couple of years. I no longer have friends to ride with. I didn't go through a whole tank of gas on my 2017 Triumph Street Scrambler this year. I finished up the '71 CB500 (a project that took a year, when I would have knocked it out in a few months before). I've put a whopping 65 miles on it.

But ... an acquaintance has offered me his 1978 CB550K. It's not running, but complete minus the RH side cover. Wasn't stored properly, so I'm sure I'll have to clean the fuel system. Hasn't run in a few years, butI remember him riding it. No title, but I can get around that. He's asking $400, and I figure it will run me between $200-300 to get a title. So ... $700 for a a complete, (eventually) titled, stock 1978 CB550K.

I'm tempted, but projects don't excite me anymore. And yet, I find myself building this thing in my head. I already know how it would turn out. The CB500/550 is easy for me. I've done a ton of them and I have some spares. Part of me says get it and take your time collecting parts, etc. But.... why? To have a 3rd bike I don't ride?

What should I do? Grab it and keep on keeping on? Skip it and focus my time, money and attention on other things in life right now?

(Does this forum not have a poll option?)

If space permits I'd say yes. You can always title it and pass it to someone else with your spares after some time has passed.

I think the Add Poll button is up here (see screenshot) but only for the original post.

It is very convenient to ride alone. I do that. No discussions where and how to ride.
I'll sometimes visit biker friends at their homes.

I'll meet other bikers once a week as I have documented with photos in the 23 rides in 2023 thread Terry started in the name of Frank, 754.

Thanks... I swear I didn't see that when creating the post. Maybe you have to add it afterwards.

I agree with Alan, if you have space, pick it up. Get it running and if one day you dont want it, sell it for $2K and use the cash to buy some vinyl records!

I understand how interest shifts mine have as well.  There are so many classic car events in my area and so few bike related that it is easy to go that route.

Refurb it and flip it. Winter is coming so you'll need something to do. Then when Spring hits, you're ready to maximize the return. (I still have a few more goodies stashed if you need some "special touches")  ;)

Scott I agree with the popular consensus here on this thread. Get it throw it together similar to your sweep the floor bike. Then slap a high price on it right as taxmas starts some kid will be excited to have a nice vintage ride.

Spend that money on whatever interests you currently.

If you really don't like project bikes anymore, why would you even think of messing with it?  Do what you want.,

There’s always room for another project. With around 25 bikes (could be more, I’ve lost count) I still look for bargains that I can eventually flip and make a few bucks out of. Like Per, I prefer to ride on my own so when a nice day comes along I like to just decide which bike to ride and go where the road takes me.

Recently I bought another Triumph Rocket 3. It was tidy but needed tyres and brakes, and the seller had decided to sell it for around half the price of a good one. The exhaust system that was on it retails for around $4K AUD here, and as it fried my right leg on the ride home I offered it for sale on a Triumph FB page and sold it to a cop in Western Australia for $1900 including $42 postage. The bike only owes me $2700 now and when I finish it (tomorrow hopefully) I could sell it for $8-10K. That will be another dilemma because I hate selling bikes, but if I decide to, someone will snap it up, and I’ll have more money for more projects. Win/win. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)
