Mobil 1 Full Synthetic Oil
« on: August 09, 2023, 04:52:39 PM »
The previous owner of the bike I just bought (2008 Honda Varadero XL1000VA) has been using this oil. I think he said 10W/40, but am checking back. Anyone else use it?

Update…. He was using Mobile 1 “V Twin” 20W-50. Curious if anyone uses it?
Very high priced! Not sure I want to follow along. Phew!

John, does it also have the additives for clutch and transmission gears(JASO MA/MA-2)in that MOBIL 1 ?
I've seen some 'V Twin' engine oil designed only for the engine because alot of those have separate transmissions and clutches.

I use Mobil 1 10w40 (Racing 4T) in the 1990 CBR1000F, and the 20w50 V-Twin in all three holes in the Road King.  One of the few things I buy at Walmart.  Change intervals on both bikes is 5000 miles.

I just reloaded the BMW K 1200GT with Mobil 1 Synthetic "racing" 4T 10W-40. I have not taken it out yet. I picked it up at O'Reilly's on sale.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Does the label say anything about 'wet clutches'? I know the Mobil 1 "V-Twin" oil is a bad idea in the SOHC4 engines. Same for the Valvoline equivalent (which turned my gearbox into a 2-speed in less than 12 miles' runtime - couldn't hardly even reach 3rd gear!).
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

I’ve ordered a bottle and will report back. I believe from all I’ve read that the answer is “yes” (unlike the V Twin oil).

Looks good to me. Too expensive for all my bikes, but the Varadero has been on this for several years, so I’ll probably stick with it…..

I used it in my V-Twin bikes.  At a bike rally I saw that S&S used/recommended Mobil1 in its engines.  It's also readily available at AutoZone and is/was cheaper than Harley oil, and I didn't have to order it online and wait.  I never had any issues with it.

Oh boy, an oil sermon, pull up a chair.
I use Dino oil in the K3 designed for wet clutch engines. I’ve used Valvoline and NAPA and Castrol, have not had issues.

Been having a hard time finding this oil in Canada. Wrote to Mobil Tech Centre and got his response (see below). They also sent the spec sheet and this option is definitely designed for wet clutches and integrated gearboxes on what they describe as all “Metric Motorcycles”. Also available as 20W-50.

Hello John,

Mobil 1 MX 4T 10W-40 has been replaced with Mobil 1 Racing 4T 10W-40.

Please reach out to the below Mobil distributor to buy the product-

Me too. Castrol 4-stroke motorcycle 10W-40 is in all my bikes. Apparently the Varadero has been on this stuff forever, so assuming I can find it, will probably carry on.

I've had pretty good luck with the Castrol 20w50 in the 750 when I also added some zinc to it. Before the zinc, the shifting would get stiff from the clutch drag. I ran it one season in my own 750, changed out at 1000 miles for the Bel-Ray EXL Mineral and the engine smoothed out noticeably.

I'm sure the manual for that engine says 20/50 semi synthetic. I use Castrol.

The owners manual just calls for a regular 10/40 motorcycle oil. I use Castrol 4T in everything else around here, so it may get a change if I can’t find that other stuff for less than $25/litre!

The 4T isn't bad in the old Hondas, and newer bikes aren't so sensitive to the lack of ZDDP in it. It's those adjustable rockers and wet clutches in these bikes that need the zinc.

Roller rockers eliminated need for zzdp or greatly reduced it's need as other lubes were needed for the rollers...
