Sleepy Time :)
« on: November 04, 2023, 07:54:57 AM »
First snow hit two days ago so it's time to put my bikes away. Valves and cam chain set, swing arm greased and the all inclusive ideal weight 10w40 oil change etc to be completed. 30,000 miles and 6 years on the point-less electronic ignition and the timing is still spot on. The spark plugs have been lasting much longer for some reason. As much as we know that these are high maintenance bikes with small maintenance intervals for valve adj etc, it takes maybe a few hours or so for everything at season end, not bad. Try that on a modern bike with fairings, airbox , throttle bodies etc that need to be removed for access, if you get lucky maybe the valves will be in spec so the cams do not need to be pulled for shimming. Unfortunately it's still the slow, heavy, poor handling old tank it has always been, nonetheless it is a simpleton for laying up for winter. I cannot say enough good things about the Tytronics ignition which has outlasted  and certainly always starts better (using a 69 year old arm on a 60,000 mile 45year old bike) than the points amplifier box I had earlier, however the other CB750 in our collection is still running points well enough, mainly due to low usage and TLC.

Oil filter element checked after the summer's use. No metal found, no wear. Obviously the 10w40 conventional oil is doing its job.

Just a small chest pump, shameless.
Here on Maui this time of year it gets a bit cooler, makes it easier to ride with full gear!

Just wondering... also I check the valves clearances at scheduled intervals, but, I can't remember I ever had to adjust them. Just curious. Am I the only one?

Every year I adjust two or three valves, they are not off much, maybe .0005".  They do not move a lot in the run of a year but I still like to know considering the access ease. I am sure I could go twice as long for the valve interval as they do not seem to regress into the seats and rocker wear seems non-existent. Did my YZFR6 around 40,000K and they were all good, now my Jetski needs them done every 100 hours with a couple of valves usually needing smaller shims due to marine conditions, but it's always at high power settings gobbling fuel.
