I agree, there's enough to cinch it down, you have the pinch bolt on the back as well. But there's a torque value for the top nut that's like 58lbs and it looks a little a short to sustain that. I know, seems like a lot of ft lbs for that. Dbl check,  I could be wrong...

Can you find a way to get a thinner top washer ?

I will look for a thinner washer.....

Torque according to Honda service manual is (Steering Stem Nut) = 57.9 - 86.7 Ft lbs.

I wonder if that’s the cap nut or the one under the tree top? That seems a lot!

It does seem like a lot.

I think the pinch bolt under the tree is 13-18 Ft Lbs.

I did find a washer at McMaster Carr....18-8 Stainless Steel Wide-Rim Ring Shim 0.048" Thick x 1" ID x 1-1/2" OD

That seems ridiculously high. Be interested to see what anyone else suggests. I leave the chrome washer and just pull it to 25 ft.lbs. Once the pinch bolt is tight, nothing is going anywhere……

I don't ever remember torquing to that value, but I do know that if you don't get the upper triple tree down flush and snug on the upper race bearing adjuster nut it'll, creep loose (vibration,  road shock) and create a bit of slop in the upper race.

Make sure you have enough room in the cap nut, too many threads and the cap nut will bottom out.  The metal blade that extends from the measuring calipers is often used to get ball park ideas of depth of something you are measuring.
I'm going to have to check out Parts more pricing in that part as I had one or two rubber boots tear on me getting them out of my 550 project which is gathering parts...

I did, put the nut on without a washer and it went all the way down.

As far as a torque value, I don't have the correct socket to torque down anyway, so will tighten it up real good with an adjustable wrench, when the time comes.  Waiting for that pilot lamp wiring harness to arrive and need to fix a couple of connectors in the headlight light bucket wiring before I start buttoning things up.

Fixed several wiring connections today with new connectors from vintageconnections...

Picture below is supposed to be a double pole, but appeared to be broken off in a previous life and the left front turn signal connector was soldered to the back side.

Assembled the front brake caliper with new piston/o-ring seal and new pads, ready to install.

Doing some touchup paint work on the frame near the front.

Received my pilot lamp wiring harness today so I started putting the wiring back in the bucket, making all the connections and put the forks on loosely until I can get the tire on.

Those fork ears look a lot better than what I had, Thanks again Mark1976.

Also received today a clutch lever that actually fits, Thanks John.

A little more progress today, front fender, wheel and brake caliper on.

All bolts on top bridge torqued, lower bridge not torqued yet, waiting to get front brake operational so I can jounce the front forks a few times before tightening the rest of the bolts.

Brake hoses and bleeding the caliper next on the agenda.

Dennis…. Looking really great! Moving ahead fast too. You can just roll the bike up against the wall to do the “bounce”!
