   Food for thought, you can lay you base coat (let it sufficiently flash) then color (let it flash) & clear coat in one process one after the other or you can shoot your base and let it dry (cure) and then wet sand it back and do your candy color coat and finish with your clear top coat. My experience with candy colors is always the layering of each specific coat (base, color, clear) and sanding it back (2000 grit) lightly before doing the next, improves the perception of depth within the finish and improves the overall quality of the finish. It takes longer but it also helps in dealing with any problems that arise. Patience is your friend in this area, especially if your inexperienced. Just a thought.

Thanks for the tips Mark, much appreciated. 

66autocolor recommended that I use Transtar 4613 (black 2in1 primer) as the base for the color coat, so I have that ordered and it should get here tomorrow. 

Like your thoughts on lightly scuffing after the base, color coat.

I have decals to go on so what I had planned was:

2-3 more coats of the Transtar black primer, scuff.
3-4 coats of color, let dry overnight, then scuff.
Apply 2 coats of 1K clear, let dry for about 2 days, then scuff.
Apply decals, let dry for a week, then apply 2-3 coats of 2K clear.

   That sounds about right, the only thing I might add is appropriate coverage and dry/cure time.  If it looks good at 4 coats, let it go, more is not better, it's a black base coat. Its only gonna get so dark. Normally 24hrs is sufficient time to dry/cure, so that sounds right, it's what ever the mfgr recommends, I'm not familiar with the 1k, 2k products.
   When you go to wet sand between base, color and clear coat don't use a new sheet of paper, use one that has been used a little bit. New paper is a little sharper/less flexible and can/will take off more surface color than you'd imagine (think sand thru). Remember your just scuffing the surface, to improve adhesion and surface continuity (dust that sometimes embeds in the surface), so go lightly. Use a little soap (a couple of drops) to your bucket of water, helps keep the paper clean. Cleanliness is your top priority, wipe it down good clean and dry between every process, especially before applying clear coat. Check your time between coats, again what ever the mfgr suggests, it'll minimizes problems like runs, and reactivity between coats and improves surface finish. I normally start with the underside of the tank, get used to whatever spray pattern and paint texture your working with under there.
   Then check your weather, look for a 2 day window of good consistent weather, 1 day for color, 1 for clear. Done.
   A week in between is good, check with whom ever is supplying your graphics about applying clearcoat over them, never hurts to ask. I normally sand right before applying clear over graphics. But that's me. Shoot your 2 coats of clear and see what you get.... Personally, at this point, once it dries 24hrs later, I'd sand it all back with 4 or 5000 grit and apply another 2 light coats. These are the coats that give you the margin of coverage to sand and rub out for your final finish, but that's up to you...
My apologies for the long winded rant, painting's not cheap anymore, so getting it done right the first time is the best advice I have. Good luck...

Placed decals on tank this morning, had a couple of small boo boos, but I straighten them out the best I could with a little heat.

They are not perfect from side to side, but close enough that I'm not gong to take them off and redo.


How long do I need to leave the decals to dry before I try to tape over them?

Plan now is to use Fine line tape on top of the decal on the inside so I can paint the cleats black, then clear coat all of it.

Gave it another 45 minutes, cleaned off tank with alcohol, Spray Way window cleaner on the decals, and started spraying clear.

3 coats of clear on side covers, 4 coats on the tank, looks good to me.

Will lightly wet sand with 2000 grit in a few days and buff.

And No, it is not perfect, but good enough for me, not building a concurs level bike.

Looks pretty good from here, nice and easy on the final sand and it'll look like brand new once you rub it out. Got any white compound.

Bill, here is the color I chose from 66auto: 

It's a 1K paint that came in a SprayMax can, good nozzle.  House of Kolor candy paint.  Took 3 cans for tank and side covers.  Base had to be black before I sprayed the color.

I hope this 550 is your 'Keeper' and you put Lots of miles on this bike,showing it off  ;)

Thanks.  No long term plans have been decided yet.  I need to schedule an appointment with DMV to get it inspected before they will register it and give me a tag.  I hope to do that in about 2 weeks.  Everything is pretty much ready, still working on cleaning inside of tank, got it soaking with Evaporust now.  Inside of tank is not to bad, so that won't take but a few days.

Last couple of days I've been thinking about painting the 750 since this one turned out well.  I may do that next fall.

The neck needs a band unpainted and then sealed with an epoxy that is fuel proof like JB Weld to prevent fuel vapor and condensate from wicking it's way under the paint at the neck and ruining your paint job.

The neck needs a band unpainted and then sealed with an epoxy that is fuel proof like JB Weld to prevent fuel vapor and condensate from wicking it's way under the paint at the neck and ruining your paint job.

I have read about that and did leave about 1/4" or so of the top of the neck unpainted.

Hmmm, might be a good idea to add that now.

Assume I just put the epoxy on top of the paint line and not on the gasket surface of the neck?
