Alternator/Stator Question

Don't know why, but my 1978 750F came with an alternator cover from a K Model. Finally sourced a proper replacement, but not sure precisely what is involved in the removal of the old cover, and installation of the new cover. Know the field coil is behind the cover (along with many other parts), and I don't want to get in over my head requiring a special coil puller which I do not have. Is this a simple exchange, or is there more involved? Thanks for any and all responses.

It is pretty straight forward.  You will probably need to replace the gasket and be aware that there are dowels aligning the cover with the case(maybe only one dowel, can't remember)   The coil is screwed to the inside of the case and those screws may be very tight, I would use a little blue loctite when replacing.  Also you will lose a certain amount of oil depending on how the bike is leaning.  Your wiring may demand attention at this time also.  The connectors are behind the sprocket cover so that needs to come off too.  And finally, be aware of the starter gear pin, starter gear and thrust washer...sometimes all this stuff wants to stick in the cover, sometimes not...just be sure you know how it all goes back in.
If it works good, it looks good...

The only thing you need to be watching for is the small reduction gear (4) and washer (6) held in place by collet (5) which has a hole in the main case and the alternator

cover, which might fall out as you remove the cover.
The coil (8) is held in by the 3 JIS screws you see in the center of the alternator cover from the outside.
The stator (7) is held in with the screws from inside the cover.
And BTW the covers and gets are the same as the K, the F just has black paint or anodized.....

Sean gave good advice, just one thing to add.  If you plan on an immediate replacement,  leaning the bike over to the right side will limit the amount of oil that will leak out, avoiding a possible mess and/or having to add oil.  I put mine in gear and leaned it against the garage wall.  And PS...use an impact driver

Did not know there was a difference other than color, and I've got both K and F models. Guess I'll have to go look!

I think the only thing different about an original F cover is gonna be that black paint.  Black engine paint I have used has always been less than durable.  The original Honda stuff has a beautiful sheen to it and seems to be pretty tough.
If it works good, it looks good...
