Which Duplicolor paint for the engine?
« on: November 16, 2023, 12:39:29 PM »
Did a search, couldn't find anything, I know it's been posted before but... I've got a 550F with a couple little dark spots on the engine where the paint has worn off. I don't want to repaint the entire thing, but just want to feather in a little paint to cover it up -- so I'm looking for the closest match. Anyone know? Or something besides Duplicolor? Thanks.

Here's the one I have used for years and while not a 100% match it is very close when doing touch ups. I did the same thing on a 1978 CB550K that is a time capsule and didn't want to repaint it, only touch up and preserve the whole bike.

I am in Canada so the CDE part of the number is only DE1615 I think in the US, but the 1615 part and colour is correct.I don't really have some good close ups of the motor where I did the respray. I did the oil filter cover and the back section of the right hand side of the lower cases, as shown here.

Dupli-Color aluminium engine paint works great. Here's the CB 400-4 we did 6 years ago and the 74' CB 550 K0. It has lasted pretty well.

Duplicolor #DE-1615

I always heat-cure it in the oven after it dries, for resistance to gasoline, etc.

Check out this sticky http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,151576.0.html

I used a duplicolor high heat about 10 years ago when I was going through my first rebuild and the engine looked AMAZING. However, when I was rebuilding the carbs fuel got everywhere and turned the paint into crap. You can get really really great results but if you get gas on the paint or have an oil leak it will quickly ruin it.
Its hard to be wrong when you know nothing!

I painted this one recently with duplicolor 1615 Cast Coat Aluminum.  It is very close to the factory color.

I use the same as KerryB. But - if painting over the already-cured paint, almost no paint will etch into the old paint, and after some years it will flake off. So, try prepping the area you will paint using aggressive lacquer thinner (the "hot" stuff, and use outdoors or light a candle in the room somewhere) to make the old paint less sealed before application. It will last longer.

I prefer to soda blast engines for paint, but that requires them to be squeeky clean to work.  Then pressure wash, then dry and paint.
