K1 750 center stand question
« on: November 16, 2023, 07:00:40 PM »
Is there anything other than the mufflers that is supposed to limit the upward travel of the center stand?

In other words, is it normal for the foot of the retracted center stand to contact the rear wheel drive chain when the exhaust system is removed from the bike?

Thanks!  ZT

I think it's quite normal - I have never had a 750 but definitely normal for most of the other models and something that comes up frequently any time a non standard exhaust is being used...

That's why there are 2 rubber pucks on the pipes. For side and center stand.

Alternative exhaust systems have sometimes a bracket with rubber as a center stand stopper.

I have got one with 4-1. But center stand look awful when not hidden by the 4-4.

I have used a screwdriver or pipe sticked in to keep centerstand in place when 1-2 pipes are removed and working with bike.

As Pewe said there should be rubber stoppers to prevent this. When I bought my bike (for $300) the previous owner had cut a notch into the center stand so it wouldnt contact the chain. I never had any issues with it but I'm sure it took away some strength.

Yes ZT that is normal when you take off the stock 4/4 mufflers, the rubber pad on #2 is the stopper. Are you just doing some work on the bike and then putting the stock exhaust back on?
If you are going to be putting a non stock exhaust on it then you will need a different way to stop the centerstand from contacting the chain.

I have fashioned a center stand stop from flat steel stock that bolts behind the rear foot peg. I usually make a notch on the end to match the shape of the center stand.

Yes, normal. I once bought a bike that had aftermarket exhaust.  The centerstand was damaged from the
PO riding it with the stand in contact with the chain.

Thanks everyone!  I'm learning a lot about my 750 here, and I appreciate your replies.

... Are you just doing some work on the bike and then putting the stock exhaust back on?...

Nope!  I actually removed my original stock 4-4 exhaust and installed a 4-2 hardly baffled collector system within a year or two after buying my K1 new in 1971.  I've only now removed the 4-2 exhaust in anticipation of receiving my no-stamp Busso pipes via David's group buy.

I took the bike for a short, very mild ride, down the block and back the other day without any exhaust installed, and that's when I first noticed the center stand was contacting the chain.  And I can tell you now, that it doesn't take long for the chain to start wearing it's way into (the foot of) the stand if it's contacting the chain.

For Red I did the very same thing. Bent flatbar with a piece of rubber hose on it.
