Bum stop seat
« on: November 21, 2023, 04:22:26 PM »
Does anyone know of a source for a bum stop style seat for the '77-'78 CB 750?

I’ve never seen one for sale. A few years ago, I saw one that a fellow made. I wish I’d taken pictures because it was truly stunning. He had a spare K8 gas tank and cut the back 1/3 off and removed the bottom. Welded the shell to the back end of his seat pan. It was trimmed and shaped perfectly to match. He’s painted the “tail piece” to match his Excel black tank, including the stripes. Had it professionally upholstered and it looked fantastic.

I made a bum stop for mine using fiberglass for the pan/ hump and upholstery foam/ CNC-stitched vinyl for the seat itself. Made a plug using shaping foam, made the mold from that, and then made the final form and painted it. From there I used the pan to make the seat backing out of more fiberglass, and then cut it to shape and stuck the foam to it. Then I cut the vinyl to approximately the right size to wrap & glue around the seat backing and attached it to the seat pan. I used the Cafe Racer Garage channel on YT for inspiration and advice.

I made one for the 74' CB 550 K0. We got a plastic $18 tail cone and built it on the stock seat pan that I narrowed the back of. After that we had it upolstered.

Does the K7/8 have the same seat mounting as the F bikes do?  Giuliari made a bump stop seat for the F bikes.  It had a fiberglass "whale tail" on it that did not mix well with the lines of the bike.  The good news is the fiberglass part just bolts off and you can make whatever kind of fiberglass or aluminum cowl you like.

Here is my white Giuliari F seat with a mock up cardboard cowl.

Was it a little like this?, or a lot slimmer?  This is on a k8 pan w/ hinges & latch.

Kerry….. that’s not it but very nice too. I like the extra storage. The one I saw was just the back 1/3 of the same tank.

I just remembered seeing a photo of a bum stop style seat that was made by a company whose name started with "g" and sounded Italian. It had either a "Honda" or "750"logo on it. Maybe I need a better brand of booze.

Giuliari...Yamiya had seats in the same style, but not to fit K7/8.  Originals were going for $500 plus back in the recent cafe racer heyday a few years ago.  Prices have died down quite a bit but now you just don't see them.   think one that fits a K7/8 would be particularly rare but in less demand than one to fit a K0-K6.

Watch the responses to your question.  Rookster already posted about his Giuliari seat to fit an F.

Giuliari is the Italian maker.
I have one that fits the K0-K6 I bought last year. It even has a trap door into the hump to put gloves, glasses and small items in.
I don't know if they offered one for the K7-K8 as you want.

This might be able to get modified to fit the K7/K8 if you can weld as the hinges and lock bolts will need to be cut off and moved to opposite sides.

Thanks to all for the responses. Just another idea for spending money on the old bike. Change for the sake of change The 1978 seat that I scored on eBay for my '77 is in like new condition and far more comfortable than the butt pads on my K1 and K2.
When I bought the '77 years ago, it featured the once popular King/Queen seat. The very embodiment of UGLY.

Respectfully disagree on the comfort angle. Personally, being trapped in the bucket after a while is uncomfortable. Being able to slide a little forward or back allows more miles in the saddle

Agreed. I have to move around more these days for my back. But on my 1800 goldwing I do like the bucket as it is plush enough.

+1 not mention the butt sweat factor on a hot day...those seats make me throw up in my mouth just thinking about it.  Personally, I have found that firm seats can be better than squishy ones on a long ride.
