Replacing top bridge bolts
« on: November 22, 2023, 04:53:53 PM »
It's winter project time, which is also dreaming about spring project time. The bolts on my top bridge are looking pretty ratty after 50 years -- the ones that attach the top bridge to the forks and steering stem, specifically.  I would like to replace them with the kit here:

If I undo these bolts holding the fork and steering stem in place, are they going to shift? Or will the lower bolts hold them in place? Was just going to do one side at a time. If they won't shift I can just swap them out like this:

If they do then I've got a giant stone ball of aligning my forks chasing me, which I'd prefer not to do.

Just do one side at a time. It won't slip down then. Don't overtighten: this can break the top tree. There should be a D-shaped spacer in the gap at the top triple tree: the D-spacer should just be captured when the bolt is tight enough. The lower triple tree does most of the work of holding the forks in place.

Yamiya has 2 kits, with and without spacer.
It differ, rhino horn K0-K2 or later K3-K6

One of them have thinner top yoke bolts. Holes in yoke too if I remember correctly.

With spacer (rhino horn)
