Hello from the UK
« on: November 30, 2023, 11:58:04 PM »
Hi,

I've just joined up. Been riding for 20 odd years. In 2020 I bought my first classic bike, a 1975 Norton Commando 850, which I love. In March his year, I scratched another itch. I bought a UK spec CB750K6.

I did not buy wisely! I managed to get it running sweet enough, after a bit of work to the carbs and ignition. It was not burning oil. But it had a top end oil leak, a sheared front centre head bolt (the external one) and plugs 1 and 2 were sooty. But I did get a few runs over the summer, which was enough to tell me the bike's a keeper, so I need to fix it.

Engine came out in October. The head was not as tight as I'd expect. The gasket faces between the head and cover were both very badly damaged. They'd been gouged from prying apart at some time. Clear daylight between the faces. I sourced a better 2nd hand head and cover. Also, the cam chain was timed 1 tooth too early. Had the cylinders checked and honed for rings. They are not in the first bloom of youth, but serviceable for a few more years. Also, the exhaust valves had a small amount of play in the guides, but less than the head I'd just taken off, so I just lapped the valves and put new stem seals in. The primary chain was in spec and cam chain feels fine and wasn't using up much adjustment. So, I decided not to take the bottom end apart.

Maybe I'll regret not going deeper, doing a rebore and valve guides, but I have time and I'd spent enough getting to this stage. So I decided to put the engine back together. In the meantime, I stripped the bike down. The frame and brackets were blasted and powder coated. New steering bearings and Hagon shocks, to replace the old shocks, which had very little damping left. The wiring loom had some dodgy household connectors, now replaced. I just cleaned the rest up, hoping it hasn't objected to being disturbed!

Next stage is to re-fit the engine. Friends  are coming round next week to help me lift it in.

So, quite an introduction to my CB750 ownership. I've searched topics on the forum, for advice and doubtless, will be doing the same in future. So, I thought I'd introduce myself.

Regards, Martin

Welcome aboard the forum Martin from across the pond in New Hampshire.
Yes you have had a deep introduction into the CB750K6. You will soon find out if you have successfully chose on the rings and valve guides. Hopefully so, as you well know by now that you have to pull the motor out to redo the top end. They are a great bike and can give many miles of great fun when taken care of.

And yes the 850 Commando is a fun ride too. I had the opportunity for the past couple of years to get to help a 90 year old friend exercise his 1974 (kick start only, right side shifter) while he was getting it ready to sell as he couldn't do the kicking or riding anymore. He has a 75 on the lift now to recomission before selling it too. He was a dealer in the 70s and 80s and the Seeley importer to the states. He still has a Condor he bought from Colin Seeley too(his daughter is keeping the Condor).

Go to the Project Shop section and start a new thread on your K6, include pictures as we all like to see the progress happening. 😀

Thank you. I need to have a few more posts, before I can upload pictures. I just looked through what I'd taken. I'd forgotten how much progress I've made. Quite pleased really. I'm not going for pristine, just reliable and tidy would be nice. hopefully, I'm on my way.

I normally take the view, ride it, keep on top of proper maintenance and leave alone what doesn't need fixing. Well, now I've disturbed quite a lot that may last have seen Japanese daylight. So, my fingers will be crossed and fire extinguisher ready, when I connect the battery!

Just curious. The wife and I were in London last week on a tour, first time there.  It is a busy/beautiful place.  We went up north from there and ended the tour in Edinburgh, had a great time.

London is busy, and many love that way of life. I worked there for 10 years, but couldn't live there.

I often feel the UK is the prettiest, most charming place in the world (in places). But, sadly, our winters go on too long.

More damage on left of photo and signs of the oil having overheated?

The head and cover are now replaced (used, but better) and all back together. Pistons cleaned up, bores honed valves lapped, new stem seals and cam timing set correctly. I'm hoping this will improve things for the next few years' riding.
