Yamiya CB750 K1 Painted Body Sets
« on: December 03, 2023, 10:13:08 PM »
I've been thinking about a Yamiya CB750 K1 Complete Painted Body Set  (Tank, Side Covers, Headlight Shell and Fork Covers) for my 1971 CB750.  As per their website info...

"The line on the tank is hand-painted.
Please understand beforehand that returned and exchange can not be accepted this product.

The tank is welded in the same way as the original one to reproduce the shape and details back then.
It is inspected but make sure to coat inside the tank to prevent leaking or rusting.
There are some rust spots due to the hydraulic test."

... I'm wondering about the quality and color match of the Yamiya paint jobs and their reproduction parts... in particular I'm concerned about their warning/disclaimer on coating the inside of a brand new reproduction tank to prevent leaks and rust.

Has anyone purchased one of these CB750 body sets who can share their experience with a review of this Yamiya product?

The price of the complete painted set plus shipping isn't much more than a quality OEM paint job would cost for my original K1 parts.

Any feedback/advice appreciated!

I ordered tank and side covers for my K6 dec 2013.
On bike 2015.

It still look really good. I have not treated tank inside. Bike is stored in a dry warm garage.
Tank like stock Honda except  for the earlier 2 piped petcock only.

I have not found any quality issues yet ;D
Ca 45.000 km done so tank has got lots of fuel.

Yamiyas paint sets are excellent, the colours are absolutely spot on with OEM parts. Regular restorers have been buying their sets for years.

I have complete Yamiya set for my 1970 CB750 that's about 5 years old. I think the quality of their parts is excellent. My tank is not treated inside. It looks great internally. Great attention to detail.

I haven't bought a set yet myself but have seen 4 different sets that friends have and I can say they are spot on in paint quality and color match and wouldn't hesitate to order a set when I have the opportunity and money as it's much faster to get from Yamiya, as in within a week or two at most to the New England area from the time you pay for the order(as long as the color is in stock). BD's high quality painting is @ 1 year out to get done at this time and upwards to $1800 for the full set you want. The Japanese yen is much lower right now, so you'll be @ $1400 now shipped in a week to your shop. If Yamiya has the color you want, don't hesitate.

The rust warning is from the water leak testing the tanks go through after they are welded as part of the manufacturing process. They are dried after the testing but not coated after the process. So they recommend that you coat the tanks with high quality epoxy(Caswell or POR15 after you inpect and clean of any flash rust) to insure no leaks over the years to come.
As with the original tanks and how they were made in the 70s, these tanks are made of steel and can flash rust inside if you don't take care of your bike over the years.
I highly recommend if you don't coat the tank with epoxy (which I don't do epoxy myself),  that you do a full tank, 5 gallons of Evaporust to clean it of any rust in it(2 days in the full tank), empty the Evaporust back into the 5 gallon bucket(to reuse at another time). Then immediately rinse the tank of the Evaporust with 1-2 qts of fresh diesel fuel,  shake well to get all moisture out, do 4 rinses. (Dump each rinse into a 5 gallon bucket to let water separate from the diesel fuel and you can reuse in a few days after it settles and separates). Then wipe out the tank with a 2' grabber stick and a clean rag. Then fully coat the tank with 6 oz 2 stroke oil. Dump out the excess oil and fill with fresh gas and it's ready to go.
I also recommend that you add a couple oz of 2 stroke oil to each or every other tank of gas to help prevent rust happening from ambient moisture that is attracted into the gas while it sets in the gas station tanks and in the bike tank before you eventually use it up. Keep the tank full of gas as much as possible during the riding season. Myself I empty my tanks each fall and store the tank emptied, fully coated with 2 stroke oil (pull the tank, empty the gas, then put in 6-8 oz 2 stroke oil and turn the tank all around to coat it). It works great to preserve the tank. Put a 4" piece of fuel line to loop the 2 outlets on the petcock to stop any oil leaking out through the petcock during the storage period(or a rubber cap on single outlet petcock of 1975 and later petcocks).
Dump the oil out of the tank in the spring (and drain the oil in the petcock) and you are ready for fresh gas and a season of riding.

I bought a K1 set in Valley Green Metallic 2 years ago.  It looks great.  I did not coat the inside of the tank as they suggest because tank liners fail over time.  There wasn't any real rust inside the tank when I got it either.  I think they just suggest that because the items are non-returnable.  One thing to note is they do not paint the black line on the left side cover lower fixing point like original.  As far as the tank stripe being painted or a decal; its under clear coat and I can't tell if its painted or not.  The one thing I did was to use rubber washers on the headlight and fork ears where the turn signal stalks mount to protect the paint.  I would highly recommend a Yamiya set over having a painter do it.

In over 30 years of having cars and motorcycles painted, I've only ever had 1 painter whose work was excellent but he took about twice as long as promised.  The rest have all been flakes; really long wait times, orange peel, unevenness, not doing what I asked for, no final finishing / buffing.  One painter actually broke off one of my side cover tabs and didn't mention it to me.  He gave me a discount when I went to pay.  I found out when I got home why.  I hate taking parts to a painter because I know I'm going to be disappointed.  The Yamiya sets will not disappoint.

As everyone else has stated. They are bang on!

I did not coat the inside of the tank. Gas mixes constantly change. Tank sealers fail.

Not one spec of rust on the tank when delivered and nothing has changed since install.

I've been hemming and hawing for a while on whether to repaint my original K1 skins or order a Yamiya Body Set instead.  The dilemma was painless while Yamiya's K1 Candy Ruby Red Body Sets (CRR) were sold out and unavailable; so I emailed Yamiya asking them to let me know if and when the CRR sets were available again.

I received Yamiya's email late last night with a warning that the Candy Ruby Red Sets would likely sell out fast, and all of a sudden it was time to make a decision.  I appreciate all the positive reviews and I pulled the trigger this morning.

Thanks again for all the replies!

Just wondering, from a true restorer's point of view, does a CB750 VIN number indicate the original color of the bike?

Colors and stripes change year to year, I prefer the K2 stripes (gold, pearl white and black) on my K0 through K2 bikes but right now the ones I have are original. I bought a gold set from a guy that went to a Yamiya kit due to his bike being too early a K0 vin number to be gold. It's also a gold wrinkle tank, there was discussion if any were factory made with both wrinkles and gold although several guys on here said they have owned them.

... Tank like stock Honda except  for the earlier 2 piped petcock only...

Hey PeWe!
Can you explain this petcock thing?  My CB750 is a K1 and I'm not familiar with the K6 si I'm guessing at what you mean.

I don't really expect the Yamiya tank will come with a petcock installed... but are you saying all the Yamiya tanks (for K0 through K6) are all setup to install only the early petcocks with two fuel hoses and mount on a flat surface with two screws like on my K1?

Does a K6 petcock have only one fuel hose and screw into a threaded "bung hole"?

Hoping you can clear this up for me!  ZT

Thanks John,

The chrome bottom covers on the gauges of your beautiful K0 reminded me of something I've been wondering about.  Were those gauge bottom covers always chrome?  I painted over the ones on my K1 with the color I painted the bike but I can't remember if they were originally chrome, black, or perhaps even red?

Can you clear this up for me?

The K0 gauges have chrome bottom covers and black plastic housings and plastic lenses. Your K1 instruments are virtually identical, except they have metal housings and glass lenses. Honda still sells the bottom chrome for the K0 but they are sort of “universal” and fit  BOTH speedo AND tach. The bottom cut out is designed to match both. They should fit your K1 too.

I ordered a set for my Sandcast project but when I saw them, I had to have the originals rechromed. The originals are left and right. If you’re interested, I can dig out the new ones for a part number?
