78 750 new guy ignition question
« on: March 16, 2007, 10:18:49 PM »
Hi, new guy here.  I got a 78 750 K, 6035 mi.  I cleaned out the carbs, new plugs, adjusted the valves, did all the basic stuff. runs pretty well now.  My question ;  it has an igniter style ignition, obviously aftermarket, with the letters "TEC" on the coils and the advance plate. The advance plate also has the number "300" on it.  Any ideas who made it is and how dependable it is? Think I should put points back in?
I also put new gaskets and an accelerator pump diaphragm in the carbs.  I didn't quite seal carb #1 perfectly and the gasket got gas on it, it swelled so much overnight that I could not get it to fit in its cutout anymore, had to use another one.  Anybody have any info on the effect modern gas has on these old Hondas?
Thanks

TEC is normally molded onto the stock coils.  If the wire are also molded into the coils, they are likely Honda supplied components.   I believe TEC was one of Honda's suppliers/contractors.
I haven't converted any of my CBs to eliminate points, so someone else will have to advise you on your points eliminator.

Were your new carb gaskets from Honda?
Regardless, the gaskets shrink back down if the absorbed aromatics are allowed to dry out.  How quickly depends on the temperature and humidity.  I have a gas oven with a pilot light always on.  Gaskets shrink back to normal overnight in there.

I've shrunk swollen gaskets by laying them under the desklamp on my workbench overnight too.

A picture would help in identifying your ignition set-up.  Aftermarket coils are usually fairly evident, being different color or style that the original, smooth, black, cylindrical units.

All in all, I think that electronic ignition is one of the best basic mods you can do to these bikes.  The difference in how the bike runs at mid to higher RPM is noticable.  Of course, I like to stretch my motors out, but I still think its worth the $200 if you have to replace what you already have.

Try to get some pics of this ignition, Im curious!

ok, thanks.  I kept the swollen gasket, maybe it'll shrink back down.. All the parts were Honda from Bike Bandit.  I don't have a digital camera, so I can't post pictures, but based on what I've seen here, the coils are stock, the advance plate is stock and has had the magnetic trigger for the pickup mounted on it.
Thanks guys, if I can get a picture, I will

TEC was one of Honda's two principal suppliers for ignition parts.
