« on: December 08, 2023, 06:19:55 PM »
I'm looking for a GL1000 clutch part number 22322-371-313 for my 1975 CB750. This is to stop clutch chatter. Apparently. Thanks

They were also used on late 750s, but no, you don't need one. ;)

I've never had chatter in my early 750 without that part. Have you experienced a chatter problem with your clutch?

If I pull in the clutch lever the chatter goes away. This was a problem with some clutches and they came up with the solution which is attached.

I tried that in my K2 since I have a late clutch for another build, it did not help.

Adjust the clutch lever by the stopper screw made difference.
I had 1/2 turn open from closed, max according to manual.

Tighter play, 1/4 turn open made a big difference.

I cannot see why adding a late double disc (Field fix) should improve an earlier clutch by removing one fiber and metal disc.

The total package will be thinner and less friction.

I tested this last summer.
- Removed 1 stock metal disc + 1 fiber. Put the later double disc in the middle.

This did not make the clutch more silent at idle.
I even replaced the clutch cover, it had a later.

I rebuilt stock setup with new fibers since I had a new Cruzinimage clutch on the shelf. Old fibers not that much used, also Cruzinimage clutch.

Stop screw opened 1/4 turn from closed a must to reduce rattle at idle (If stop screw has been opened more)

A few photos.
The caliper measurement photos have parallax issues  (from side) and not showing exact.

My modified K6  got a complete later clutch with double metal disc + 5 std metal discs and 7 fibers. The outer steel basket deeper and the clutch alu hub also deeper for the thicker package.

This is more rigid and better for more power, like 2 clutch packages with the double metal in the middle.
Harder springs too.

As an aside: what I find stops clutch chatter (at idle) the most is a full tune up and a really accurate carb sync.

I'm in agreement with Benellisei. I ride a K4 and had some mild clutch chatter.  After a very thorough tune up and carb sync the clutch chatter diminished.  I also replaced the metal discs and fibers.  I've seen this modification and opted just to do a careful tune up and it worked for me. Only 34K on the motor.  Good luck and keep us posted.

No just the gl1000 double steel plate can be used in the 750.

Read through this link on the 750 clutch and why you have to properly adjust the screw and nut down behind the clutch cover.

Thanks. Apparently you can replace the hole clutch assembly with a 1977/79F or K clutch assembly. Interesting.

That what others posted above…it’s the factory fix as indicated in the Wrench article you attached…

Have you checked your primary chain and guide/tensioner..?

If your 34k included a lot of spirited riding you might check it…the tune up and carb sync helps suppress the familiar Shunka, shunka, shunka sound they make at idle…

There a primary cushion hub that deteriorates with time and heat cycles..

What do you describe as “clutch chatter” …?  Take off at elevated rpms going uphill..?

Or just noisey excessive clearances rattling at an idle..?

There's a bit of irony to this GL clutch plate thing. My 77 F2 has it from the factory and my 83 GL1100 interstate did too but while some 750 owners consider it an upgrade, the GL owners on the site I visited during the time I had my GL thought it was an upgrade to get rid of it and replace it with 2 steel plates in order to maintain stack height. I guess the rivets that hold that plate together can get weak over time and come apart reeking havoc to the clutch.

That's likely clearance between the plates and basket, I'm told a good cylinder balance will minimize it. My 71 dragbike had a loose ring around the clutch basket. I tack welded it and after that it was much better.
I found my last double plates on ebay, I can't say if they are better with it or not, but the drag racers seem to like them.

You have the typical "clutch rattle", which can be minimized by having a smooth idle, as others have said. It is not something of concern. ;)
"Clutch chatter" is something else entirely: it occurs when starting out from a stop, and instead of the clutch engaging smoothly, it jerks, or chatters. My brother had a 1963 Corvair, and the clutch chattered so badly that the glove-box door would sometimes shake open. :o
