Ball bearing size for switch
« on: December 10, 2023, 12:26:36 PM »
Today's minutiae post is:  🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁

The correct size for the kill switch detent ball bearing! I forum member was kind enough to measure theirs for me and came up with 0.123", or just a hair under 1/8".

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,178272.msg2069582.html

I bought a 1/8", then thought, maybe it's actually 3mm, since this a metric bike? But now I'm back to thinking 1/8" because the steering head uses #8 ball bearings, and maybe imperial sized bearings were just the standard back then. Mine has a 3mm bearing in it and I think I'm going to leave it that way. The last bearing rusted and got stuck, causing the ball bearing to destroy the notches on the switch body, which I had to rebuild with JB Weld. So 3mm is less likely to get stuck in the future.

Anyway for those curious, attached is the 1/8" ball on the left, the original ball in the middle, and the 3mm ball on the right.

Also genuine ball bearing for 1975 CB750 right hand switch for sale, needs work. No low ballers, I know what I've got.

Clever solution. I wonder how it will hold up.

If you can feel the “click” with the 3 mm ball I’d leave it alone. As you stated, it’s less likely to damage your repair. Nice work!

Thanks! It's got a pretty good click now so I'm going to call it good enough. Before the rebuild it was easy to knock it out of place if my hand brushed past it, now it's nice and solid.
