400/4 Side Stand Mount MIA!
« on: December 10, 2023, 08:50:32 AM »
Can anyone help on this one? My 400/4 lost its side stand and the frame mount somewhere along the way. I have a garage that can fabricate and weld a new mount. However, the have asked if there is a diagram or similar of it with the shape/dimensions etc. Has anyone seen such a thing? If not, could someone give me a sketch with measurements? I have scoured the web but not found anything so far.

Many thanks

"Somewhere along the way " as in while you were out riding?
Or by a previous owner, maybe it was removed for a race bike using a paddock stand?

I don't know but expect it was damaged at some stage. There has been some welding done right where the side stand was.

It was common for the mounts to rust and collapse the tube so were removed and hole welded so nomore stand

I could imagine that was the case with mine. I would like to have a side stand again. My garage tells me it isn't a major job to make and weld a new mount if I can get him the dimensions.

My 400-4 that I owned in the eighties was the same - I suspect the PO had an accident that ripped out the side stand mount. It never did have a side stand during my time with it - to tidy it up, when I repainted the frame I cut out the frame tube between the two bottom engine mounts both sides and plugged the ends with bicycle handlebar end plugs.
If you obtain a 400-4 side stand and give that to the mechanic he should be able to design a mount piece to suit?

When I needed one for my Rickman frame, I put an ad in the wanted section on this Forum. Someone was kind enough to cut out that section from a damaged frame and send it to me. I carved the tube portion in half and shaped it so the entire thing got laid over the existing tube on my frame. Buy a used side stand, decide where you want it, and at what angle. Clamp it in place with a pair of hose clamps and get your welder to tack it in. Remove the  hose clamps and finish welding…..

I believe, if I'm not mistaken, the mounts for the 350F and 400F are in different locations because of the set back pegs on the (earlier) 400Fs and the linkage, which required putting the stand a little farther behind.

As others have noted, it was a weak spot --not helped by people who sat on the bike with the side stand down.

That pic I have posted is a 1975 CB400F and the measurement drawing is from a 1972 CB350F with the side stand in the same position on the frame. I realize there were some slight differences on the footrest/gear change set up on the last year of the CB400F. Yet I think the side stand appears to be correctly positioned for at least the models up to the last CB400F year which was 1976/7???

The last 400F's were from 1978 I believe. I had one back then and recall the side stand being mounted further back as others have noted.

A quick google image search shows that the 350F's side stand is mounted below the stator, and the 400F's is mounted 6 or so inches back, below the front sprocket.

MDW, what year is your 400? I have a last-year '77 rolling chassis, and if I recall correctly, the kick-stand is further back than the '75-76 400s. I can take a pic and measure if needed, but I think it's like CC said.

I had a 400F that also had a wimpy sidestand mount. I gusseted it to the frame with a weld bead. The person that bought it tied it down on the sidestand and pulled it tight. I told her it would be broken off by the time she got home so we re-tied it standing straight up.

Here is a friend's 76. The side stand is back near the shifter toe rubber.
Sorry it isn't a good angle as it was on my phone from last year when I was over there.

So clearly the later bikes were further back and the 1975 was in the forward position the same as the early CB350F. Here is the 1975 CB400F in a more finished state.

The poster didn't reference which year he has, yet I suspect the design of the bracket is likely close on all years.

Did you get the mount made and installed? If so, You need to finish your thread showing what you did.
Forum etiquette is to complete any thread you start,(on any forum) that way someone else who finds your threads doing a search for their problem will get helped.
