Race Helmets
« on: December 19, 2023, 02:27:58 PM »
I need a new race helmet, with a SNELL SA2020 sticker. Nomex liner, with inserts for the tether connections for my HANS Device. I am amazed. Excellent quality helmets at 1/2 the price I’ve paid in years past. This will be the 10th one I buy and it will be LESS than I paid for my first full face BELL STAR helmet in 1971. Today’s  are composite materials and weight about 1/2 of the STAR. Wow.

In 1970 I was wearing an open faced BUCO helmet with a peak, goggles and a scarf! It was metal flake blue and looked pretty cool. All the guys teased me about the full face helmet, but a few years later we were all wearing them. A fellow in a Formula Ford race I was in took a bird in the chest. It broke his jaw and he lost a few teeth. Open face helmets disappeared quickly after that!

I like the full face helmet for the protection from wind buffeting. My helmet options are a little more limited due to the freakish dimensions of my oversize gourd. The only helmet I can get to fit properly is the Arai “long oval” model and I have to get that in 2X. Standard head form helmet molds would put enough pressure on my forehead to give me a headache within 2 hours. I was on the verge of giving up riding completely when I found the Aria long oval. I have ridden 12 hours with the Arai pain free. Even on clearance/closeout I struggle to find the Arai for less than $500.

Worth every penny!

The options are staggering! My HJC “flip” is getting old. They make a newer version that I like, but the regular replacements of my race helmets makes for an ever growing collection!

I ordered an SA2020 Helmet on AMAZON of all places. I race with three other guys and they are all waiting to see this helmet before they order. The price is so reasonable that we are all a bit suspicious! We’ll know in 48 hours.

Note: That price is Canadian dollars!

I bought a full face G force and like it a lot more than any of the Bell helmets that came before it. I made sure it's sfi spec in case I get into the race car. I'm probably giving up some abrasion protection not looking for a dedicated bike helmet.

The helmet arrived, next day. Exactly as described, with the SNELL 2020 rating I need. Fits really well, all the hardware for the HANS  device is perfect and the interior is Nomex. Very satisfied.

I'm with you on this one: the only helmets I could ever wear all day (touring) were/are the ARAI. I still have one, now 50+ years old, and my daily protector. My first one was shown in my book, which was made (by ARAI) to match the Garnet Brown Honda color of my 750's tank: someone stole it off my bike during a tour. I rode home from that tour w/o a skid-lid, then bought the silver one I have now because it looks like a cop's helmet. That seems to have worked.

This helmet got REAL expensive in the last century, and I still don't know why?
