No, it's looking pretty good now. The warm wires hadn't melted and I cleaned all of the connectors that I could get to. It takes me a while with the diagram to understand what's what. The two wires that I abandoned are only going to an unused part of the headlight switch.
I still don't know where the newly found red wire comes from but I think a fuse removal or three might provide a clue. It's really odd that adding that wire to the red to the single fused feed reduced the load on the entire red wire path.
I made a little aluminum wrench to put on the keychain to help move the tiny stiff petcock lever easier in case I ever need reserve.

It's time for a jet change, the #1 jet came along with the emulsion tube and the tube won't come out of the bowl hole. I tried holding the tube with an 8mm wrench and turning the jet with an offset screwdriver but it looked like all I was accomplishing was boogering up the jet.
It appears that I need to pull the carbs, at least the first time. I'll likely drop the needles a notch while they are off and try the float bowl socket head screw set that's been in stock for a while.

I got the carbs off, dropped the mains two sizes and dropped the needle one notch, the pilots are 17.5. The lower rpm's aren't as fat as the top end and mid-range so I'll leave them alone and work on the pilot screws.
The float bowls had brown staining in the bottoms, I'm guessing it's from the rusty tank that I thought was now clean. I hate to put a paper fuel filter on it, but I'll see if one fits.
I don't mean to brag but I moved 4 needle clips and didn't shoot any of them across the shop or lose any screws.

I did a 2 mile parts run on the 11 today, I didn't put the O2 sensor in but it ran fine and accelerated well.

Well, put some miles on it (50), pull a plug and physically see what you have compared to what the O2 shows. If it's still excessively rich in any one area, you'll see it. The O2's pointing in what area to adjust, now just a matter of how much.

I agree with that assessment. It for sure needs some miles on it, so does my recently neglected gl1000.

My brother wanted this K2 that he sold to me back. Apparently now that I owned it for a while there's an implied warranty. This bike got all of the chrome that came off of the other bikes that I bought and the Hondamatic aluminum wheels that came on a parts bike. Looks good, refuses to run right.
Moral of the story, time off my projects because his projects never end.

I couldn't decide how to wire the Fiam horns so I made an impromptu fuse holder from a 25 amp blade fuse and a pair of spade connectors. It's sitting there waiting to be ridden. Here I sit not doing it.

I got in a good ride on the GS1100 with the a/f meter on. It reads a lot lower/better now, I'm not seeing consistent numbers, once it was reading way rich and I stopped, turned it off and back on and let the sensor heater warm back up. Then the numbers looked right, it has me wondering if my probe is flowing enough exhaust to keep the sensor hot. I really hate to drill the header for the O2 sensor but it might come to that.

The jet changes leaning it out Don? What A/F ratio numbers are you getting now ?

It's mostly in the high 12's and mid 13's, I did see low 14's a couple times. It was just a two-mile ride, I'll know more when I get more time. I'd love to get video of the a/f meter and gauges while it's in operation.
When I rode it away from home cold it cackled a little, it probably wanted a little choke.
The lights are much better now too. The speedometer only made it to 85, dang. I have a gps speedometer that needs a mount and a plug-in.

I got in a 65 or so mile ride, I came back on back roads and got into some fun twisties. It's difficult to have a lot of fun since there are patches of pea gravel here and there. I did a little skidding on one.
Between the motion pro push-pull throttle and the RS36's I got a good wrist workout.  I have one of those paddle throttle helpers I'll see if it fits this Randakk's grip. I drove directly behind a corn combine that has just made the turn at a fence line. I just clicked off the engine and coasted through the dust cloud. No sense crapping up the K&N's already.
I really need mirror offsets, most of what I see is my arms.
I was suffering a bout of gout, the riding and vibration must have helped. My braking foot feels a lot better than before I left.
I want to get some fresh plugs to verify my jetting, it cackles between shifts. I'd expect that on de-cell not as much on accel.

I've been able to get the odometer trip set to work at times but when I can get it to re-set it stays at Zero until I mess with it while riding. I'm watching for a nice breadbox gauge set. Marketplace has one that reads in kilometers for $50. That would eliminate the 85 mph deal.

Oh yeah, the sealed instrument pod of 1981' Suzuki GS-E models.
I've replaced the rubber mount cushions on mine,so that it's finally vibration isolated.
I have my eye on a set of gauges where the speedo(120mph)will fit into my factory pod;it has the same angle for the gearbox and the same speedo rim, as mine has two separate gauges sandwiched inside that one-piece pod.

I was able to make a Best offer on this speedo + right side lights-in-place-of-tach off a 83'+ GS300L (I only need the speedo & that's the only full gauge that looks like a direct drop-in to my 81' GS450E) the 83'+ speedo's do delete the 85mph-only speedo from 80-82'.

I plan to remove all the outer/lower 'cup' from this donor 120mph speedo/gauge,then open-up the 'breadbox' and swap-out the inner/orig. 85mph speedo for this 120mph gauge/speedo assm.,then seal-up the 'breadbox'.
The seller accepted my offer of $65 (plus the gauge only has 8800 miles on it;I feel it deletes 11000 miles off the life of my bike  :D..Not) so it's on the way to me:I hope it works.

I agreed to buy an 80/81 Kilometers only speedometer that's reportedly in great shape. $50 plus the ride sounds good to me, if only the housing is nice that's OK. I'm hoping to somehow print out a mph overlay to fit under the kph scale and maybe use it to repair the miles odometer. I may even buy a third one for parts if needed.

Tonight, I re-visited the jet box and found the fourth 127.5 jet so I'll try them next, I need to be sure the O2 sensor gets heated well before the ride. I noticed if it gets turned on and heated when the engine/exhaust is cold, the readings are richer.

The plugs looked darker than expected so I left the jets as is for now.
I decided to work with my "new to me" tool set off of ebay. The plug socket was wrong so I got a Honda tool out of the tool stash and then realized that there was no way to turn one of the screwdriver bits so I borrowed a plastic handle out of the GL1000 kit.
While ordering new tank rubbers, I saw that Partzilla has a lot of the tool bags listed so if I was starting over I'd figure out which number it needs and get a new one. Actually, the Ebay tool bag appears new so it may have been cherry picked and then re-sold for what it cost. L0L!
The bike had a Kawasaki looking tank rubber that I tossed thinking it had to do with the 29's not clearing the petcock. Now I see there were two on the bike originally and they are no longer available. I may have a look at kawasaki parts to see if I can find something.
