Don,have you checked-out Hi Flo oil filters #HF-133 ?
They are comparable to,or better than OEM.

I got a 3 pack of them off of ebay. I can buy the Honda filters at the local parts store, but not for the Suzuki.
I rode it today, the exhaust pop isn't getting better with miles, I think I need to check for a vacuum leak, if it's not that then pull the carbs again. I bought choke plungers and some rubber parts last year just in case the Rat Race needed them, I may give the chokes (or whatever the term is) a look.

The #4 idle screw doesn't change the idle at all. I can spray carb cleaner through the air bleed and it comes out inside the carb. I can also spray it into the screw hole and it comes out of the air bleed and inside the carb.
I'm still suspicious of the #4 choke plunger leaking air, although spraying anything around the top of it has no effect.

Don,stock carbs?
The mixture screws point straight up and especially #4 is susceptible to water sitting in it & being held in there like a small shot glass.
I hope you remove all the pilot screws and have a look at the inside holes;some of the holes/screws could have been reamed and it's giving a rich condition.
The tiny o-ring on each pilot screw could get replaced:that would be my first go-to.

Sorry, I mentioned early in the thread but not lately they're 29 mm mikuni smoothbores. Some say they're a bit small for the bike. I'm not above selling them and getting bigger mikunis but I'd like to be able to say they are working right first.

Ok.
Don,they're ok for street.
I had a pair of 33mm smoothbores on a GS1100 for just a short time  :) :) :)

I topped the tank off with regular no alcohol gas today, then went home and put my portable wide band O2 sensor on the bike. It still has a little of my av gas storage mix in it.
I only got a short ride, but it has a strong exhaust pulse through the probe that I made and reads mostly on the performance side between 10-1 at richest and 12-1, the only time I saw 14-1 was with a closed throttle. I'll get a pic or two, maybe a video while under way if I can locate the phone camera safely. With an extension I might be able to sample individual cylinders, the Kerker muffler is pretty wide open inside. If the probe is 3/8" OD I could use a piece of aluminum or copper tube attached with a compression fitting.

I think the #4 carb has a low slide, I've cleaned and checked the jets but the old fuel line (after a clean filter) did have some crud in it. Hardly any vacuum at the air filter when idling.

A guy on the GS forum is sending a long swingarm bolt for a donation to the forum. It's nice to find other folks like the ones here.
We've been busy with a race association meeting, volunteer work and union business recently and it's been cold and rainy. I really want to hit the road with the O2 sensor, it might need a jet change but want to ride it a bit before deciding. I ground a screwdriver to get the low speed jets out but it's too long for use on the bike.
I do want to buy a bunch of allen head bowl screws, since the paypal has cooled off a bit it's time to get some more stuff coming.

That's cool about the new swingarm bolt.
I fired up both of the GS's on Friday. The 81' was a bit stubborn but it finally got going and ran great once it got warm. It needs the cobwebs blown out. Soon it will be decent riding weather.
Once I finish building the driveway rake I'll be done with the big winter projects and I can get back to the bikes.

It turned into winter again here. I've gone into my usual shop mode and have multiple projects.

I got the proper swingarm bolt and installed a correct left side footpeg bracket. I now have two of the shorter bolts if anyone needs one. I'd guess they are common on the earlier model GS that doesn't have the aluminum foot peg brackets.
I saw a pic of a set of Honda aluminum brackets that were skeletonized, they look pretty light and a cool design.

Today it got a decent ride, the wide band O2 gauge reads around 12-1 cruising at 70mph, at idle it was around 14-1 so I think the pilot jets are not too big. Anytime I opened the throttle all the way the AFR went directly to 10-1 plus and at times it broke up a little.
To me that says the main jets may be too big. The 29's have the big bowl drain so I can drop a jet without pulling the bowls. I didn't think to write down the sizes when it was apart.

Edit: it has 125 Mikuni jets, the closest set of 4 that I have is 107.5

I ordered 120's and 122.5's. I also have a set of 26's with 115's in them but that seems too big a jump. Apparently, the drag racer that owned this didn't really ever get it dialed in.

True, I've read the suzuki's take a different slide than a kawasaki or honda the Z1 FAQ carb info at the top of this section mentions the kz and hondas are about the same setup.
It did run better today since I re-cleaned the #4 carb. Almost no popping now but when warm and cruising through town it seemed a little ragged. I'm going to pull a plug or two and see what they look like.

It's rich, if it's getting ratty once it's warm, it's definitely rich. Your o2 meter confirms it. Plugs will be black as a cat.

I think the jets we have are take-outs from the local kawasaki shop when my brother was working there. Apparently why there are pairs and singles of a few sizes.

On F/B marketplace there's a gs1100 Wiseco big block 80mm cylinder, pistons, gaskets and most everything for a 1325 except pin clips for $600 Cheap enough to be a scam but it looks real.  It's in mid Michigan.

No, I'm neck deep in projects, as much as it sounds like fun it would lead to a chain reaction of rebuilding a crank and cams and head work etc. Somebody should go there though.

You could check it out and if it's legit, buy it for a time later in your ownership of the bike..
I did all the mods you mentioned on an 83' I owned, only I bored the stock jugs for 1170 Wisecos.
The bike had PLENTY for the street, plus when it got Fully warmed-up,it would be hard to start, especially in traffic.
I can see that a 1325cc top-end like that would be better for pure strip use.
