This can't be farther from the "sad" truth.  Recycling your trash, carpooling and/or not driving every chance you get (e.g. save trips to the grocery store to get everything needed at once), not buying products with excess amounts of packaging, conserving energy by not turning all the lights on/leaving lights on all the time (and buying halogen bulbs!), DON'T LITTER (it amazes me that people are so lazy as to still do this), don't throw bleach or other chemical liquids (e.g. OIL) down the drain, or ESPECIALLY into a stream/river/pond, etc. etc. etc.  Common sense stuff, guys.
Living green simply means living with an eye toward environmentalism.  And most of those things I just listed will actually SAVE you money!  You don't have to spend exorbitant amounts of money to respect the environment.

We may not agree on the subject of human caused global warming, but I am with you 100% on this.

True enough.
But that's only mitigation of the damage we are doing. Delaying the inevitable, as it were.
Who can afford to set up wind farm to power their electric car? Who could actually afford to subsist of totally renewable assets? Who can afford to make their house out of adobe and have it meet building codes? Who can afford to have a farm from where they grow their own food, and in doing so, eliminate waste?
You can't do this if you wish to live in the modern world unless you are stupidly rich. And doing it stupidly poor will send you back to the middle ages.
No.

I have done some research into solar power and like what I saw. Yes, the initial outlay in funds can be worrisome, but the overall advantages are quite good. Very clean energy, you never have to clean up bird guts. While the arrays are most efficient in direct sunlight, there is still power generation on coudy days, just not as much. Both federal and state agencies offer rebates that can add up for using solar power. Many states are starting to require power companies to credit your account for power you generate that they utilize elsewhere. The more you convert to electrical appliances, electric on demand water heaters, electric space heaters, electric oven and stove, long life light bulbs, etc, the less you rely on gas and heating oil, which is more expensive than electricity. An electric blanket will warm you better in bed than an electric space heater at less power. You can think of things all day to save energy, imagination plays a role here too, if you can imagine it, it might work for you.

Average number of days with no (or very little) sun in Portland Oregon per year:
236
Average number of days with rain or snow in Portland Oregon per year:
122.6

Not such a good place for Solar Power...
But, if you live in a sunny climate, yeah.
I love the fact that the power company has to pay YOU for any extra power you make (as it goes back to the grid).

Thata what is so nice about these modern solar cells, even on cloudy days they still convert indirect light to electricity, and they are getting better every year.

Just sliding back to the original question for a moment, I believe that most oil found in the ground originates from English cars, particularly Jaguars.

I've never seen one that doesn't leak the stuff, but maybe that's an "eco-freindly design feature, whereby these "oil distributors" return oil back to it's place of origin? :)
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

So they invented recycling along with just about everything else, eh? ;D

Pretty much Bob, like most motorcycle component designs, they invented it, then the Japs perfected the design. Good thing is, it's rare to find a Brit car with a rusty floor, the oil distribution system also preserved everything from the engine back, ha ha!  ;D

Unless of course we're talking about those wierd steel/aluminum frame Range Rovers of English lore.  They don't fare to well after about 50 years of neglect  :D

Electric Power--All the technology is here and ready to power your vehicle--Hybrids and hydrogen are sellouts.
Better (readily available) battery technology would help, but the companies doing research are all owned or controlled by the oil companies or GM.
Even with what's available today--no problem getting 70 miles on a charge.
Most people drive less than 20 miles to work.
Note: the power generated to charge your electric vehicle is much more efficient and cleaner than a gasoline burning car.
I built an electric motorcycle to check this stuff out and it works fine.
What if somebody who knew what they were doing worked on this ?

Solar power is even viable in portland oregon, as there are cells that will be coming to market with 40% efficiency.
http://www.eetimes.com/news/latest/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=196602149

On top of that, there is work being done on a new type of solar collector that can come in colors and be applied to any surface as it is a film and not a panel. It is supposed to be even more efficient than panels are and is supposed to be out in the next few years. This would eliminate the need for large rooftop arrays and will not stick out so bad since it comes in colors.  I wish I could find the article again.

Some of you do need to come out of the garage and check things out a bit more.   Go to www.digg.com
Good site for things like this, yes there is fluff but any site has that and you can read about a great many things.

That article is a bit behind the times though. I have a friend who installs these systems and he said that the new 208 watt panels are averaging better than 43%, and getting better all the time.

Depends on how much you want to pay too. I will wait for the solar film though. On top of being supposedly better and able to be applied to any surface pretty much, it will be cheaper to manufacture too.  Regardless which one a person uses though, it is a good thing.

This stuff sounds interesting. I wonder how weather resistant it is?

It was supposed to be pretty good.  Unless you get monster hail like we do in the midwest, then it really does not matter anymore! :o

I think that if we put a collection pan under all the british bikes and cars, and mid 80's chevy trucks, we would have more than enough oil !!!!!

$2000 cash rebate for buyers of new gas saving  vehicles

$4000 cash more added to the retail price of a new gas guzzler vehicle

its which ever vehicle the epa rates as energy saving or gas guzzling

this all has to be passed through parliiment. but the times are changing
