Thanks guys, by sheer coincidence I’d seen the ad on FB Marketplace before I went on the ride, and had contacted him because I was interested in the luggage, especially the very rare BMW small top box, that will be handy to stow some wet weather gear in for when I get around to riding the BM to work.

He’s a nice old guy and because I was the first of several folks to contact him, I got $250 off his asking price and first option. The bike is still registered (non transferable club plate, like mine) and most of the parts that were scorched have been replaced, but not installed, so I only need a short wiring harness to get it going. The local BMW wrecker has one for $80, so it might be worthwhile to buy it, get it running and take it for a ride before doing the engine swap. To do the swap you just unbolt the frame from the engine/trans/rear wheel assembly, and roll the bike away from the driveline.

I think the easiest thing would be to do just that with both bikes, and bolt them back together so I don’t end up with a lot of parts lying around afterwards. Then when I pluck up the courage to rebuild my engine, I can just reverse the procedure and have my original bike back on the road, and a good K100RS to tidy up and sell, less the luggage which I’ll keep for my bike. That’s the plan for now, anyway. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Well interesting day. I took the 71 K1 out for its first shakedown cruise of the year and about 45 minutes into it I started feeling light headed and nauseous. Good thing I was close to home, as by the time I made it in the house I was quite ill. After a session on the porcelain I went to bed and that was 7 hours ago. Still hot and cold flashes and bad stomach but better. I hope it goes away by tomorrow afternoon as I have to pick up my wife from the airport and she has been gone for 7 weeks!
As for the ride #25, this was the bike. Didnt have the time to take a current pic.

That’s not good mate, something you ate? Anyway well done on ride #25, and hopefully your stomach bug will be gone soon. Nothing worse than having to spend every waking moment on the can. ;D

I got a chance to get out Sunday.....and took it, number 14 is done. Last year when I went to Joshua Tree national park I bought a senior pass for 20 dollars, as long as it is valid (1 year) you can upgrade to a lifetime for $60 more. Since I want to do Death Valley it will pay for itself quickly. I know I could upgrade it online, but that wouldn't be any fun!
So with that in mind my destination was Joshua Tree plus a few side trips. It was a bit warm when I started at 84° f/ 29° c as a I headed for Yucca Valley. It warmed a bit as I passed through Beaumont and stayed at 97° f/36° c all the way to Morongo Valley ( about 30 or 40 miles). Comming into Yucca Valley it dropped to mid to upper 80's which to me is just about perfect. The last time I was out that way I missed the turn for Pioneer Town and I really wanted to go there. Pioneer Town is an old, but still used movie set for westerns and commercials, it's pretty cool! The last time I was there I was about 14 years old, almost 60 years ago. My buddy and me rode down from Big Bear in the mountians, my C200 (90cc) Honda and his Trailmaster 80 Yamaha. That was quite the trek back then. Any hoo I milled around town for a bit then headed for Joshua Tree.

I tried 3 different places to get my pass upgraded and they were all closed, crap! Finally after making my way out to the entrance by the Marine base I struck gold and got it done. The only thing left to do was to make a pass through the park, I think that is about a 25 mile run the way I went. Found a nice place to park and get a few pics and enjoy some coffee. I had told the wife "oh I'll probably be home before dark" but as it was getting dark and I was about a hundred or more miles away.....      that wasn't happening!

After all my recient work on the bike and new tires, I was very happy EXCEPT for the leak in the fork cap /suspension adjusters. The FJR has excellent wind protection that makes a bit of a back draft behind the windshield,  this sucked the oil from the leak up and turned it into a mist. I got oil on the tank, my jacket, the inside of the windshield,  and my face shield.  I had to stop and clean it  off the face shield 3 times.

Other than that it was an awsome 272 mile ride!

Stats:
   Start temp.             84° f/29°c
   Mid temp.               77° f/25° c
   Home.                     61° f/16° c
   Total distance.      272 mi/438km

Now for too many pictures! Oops, forgot the map!

Well done Jim! Pity about the fork leak, that'd piss me off, but at the volume it's coming out, in a couple more long rides, there shouldn't be any left, and you'll be good to go. My old FJR1300 had done 146,000 miles and I don't remember any fork oil leaks, had your bike sat for a long time? The guy I bought mine from did around 100 miles a day teaching at a Christian school 50 miles from home, and he religiously (pun intended) maintained it with only Yamaha OEM parts. He was only a little feller, and used to change his tyres (whether they needed it or not) every 15000 miles. When I picked the bike up the tyres were square, as there were very few corners between his home and the school where he worked. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

That's what I was thinking about doing Terry, but it's such a small amount it will probably take 2 or 3 sets of tires th completely drain the whole leg, I don't have that kind of money. I tookbothcaps off today and might try adding a touch of corn starch. I dunno.

Nice ride Jim!  Could you use teflon tape on the cap threads to stop your leak?  It's hard to tell from the photo where the oil is coming from...

The caps have 2 different adjustments for the forks, preload and down damping. Yamaha says buy a new cap assy for $175 to $200 each, YIKES!

Race Tech is about 5 miles from my house, so I'm going to see if they can supply replacement o-rings not offered by Yamaha. They don't leak a lot, just steady, then then with speed the stuff vaporizes and goes everywhere.

Looks like a great ride, Jim.  State park passes are great.  I have annual pass for Texas.

Do what the old Harley guys did when their forks leaked...tie a bandana around it.

Well, I just finished doing a 489 post review, whew. I have gained 10 lbs looking at all your good food, and have a wheelbarrow of envy for your rides and your countryside and your motorcycles. I have tried to count the participants and wow, I have counted 13 riders, one completed and many in double digits, wow, and April has a few days left. I’m just checking how many awards might be needed. Here is who I found:
1 Terry 2 Jgger 3 Ofreen 4 Budman 5 BallAquatics 6 willbird 7 bluezboy 8 lash 9 newday777 10 Benelli Sei
11 Kevin D 12 PeWe 13 Kelly E
3 continents, 4 countries, 8 states, 2 provinces I didn’t count the rides or the miles, but you all have covered a lot of ground, and much more just ahead. There is still lots of time to make 24 rides if you’re on the fence, c’mon let’s go!

Good job guys, especially Kevin for keeping track.

I like to go back and re-read  to get inspiration and envy the varied bikes and topography. So many things that others post I don't have around where I live. So even if you fall short of 24i love the stories and different food. So like Kevin said, c'mon and post up some rides.

What I haven’t done here is count each and every ride of yours. Everybody is counting their own, TYVM.

I started keeping my own log after I screwed up on my count, only once, haha. What I’ve found for myself is that, even though I’m behind most all of you with 3 rides for April I’m way ahead of myself in prior years. :)

First day back on the bike for ride #26 after getting sick last Monday . Felt good to get out and get some fresh air. Again windy and cool but I’m not complaining.201 km.
Have to get some miles on my 71 cb750 as I might possibly be selling it in the coming weeks but it will have to warm up some.

Lash glad you are well again, as would be your wife. Jim congrats on ride. Terry sorry to hear of the worst on your bmw and the promising anticipation of the new Hindenburg BMW...
I've been watching some BMWs on bat, not a good indicator of prices but interesting to see how some bikes go really high...
Pickup truck prices on BaT are in the stratosphere on most.
Inflation certainly has driven the prices through the roof.
You catch the thread about the EU trying to ban vintage and classic vehicles including motorcycles...if that proposed legislation goes through the Uber left leaning crowd in the US will be trying to ram that down everyone's throats here too. The whole ICE vehicles production shutdown is stupid IMHO and Ill conceived and many hate being told they cannot have something they enjoy... It is like the world is getting crazier by the minute

There have been many rides so far this year, if we are doing 50 miles I'm sure I'm already over 24 as we've had a really nice and dry winter here. But I haven't been keeping track or posting here. I will start out with our first big ride of the year though from last weekend, over the course of three days we rode about 200 miles/day to Portland and back. Cat had her cb550 chopper in the motorcycle show there. Since we rode down and arrived kinda late, they ran out of the white platforms for her bike. I did complain about it, but they didn't have any more. They did put her bike front and center, though, in front of the stage. I rode the K0 because I needed to carry her around the rest of the weekend, while her bike was tied up at the show. Both bikes performed great with no issues, aside from a broken gas cap latch on the K0. Oh and I did NOT ride the K0 on the beach in long beach, despite begging from friends. Lol
