Ride #25, 117 miles.
I didn't have much planned for today and not much work to do that is pressing. Seemed like a great excuse for a ride so I took off to Kerrville for breakfast. Instead of two tacos, which I normally order, I ordered one large taco. But since I asked for a corn tortilla, they gave me two instead of one big flour tortilla...filled with sausage, bacon, spicy Mexican eggs, potatoes and cheese. Very meaty and delicious.
After I ate, I rode down to Camp Verde, TX. I've ridden past it several times but have never stopped. There was an old US Army camp there established in 1856, but it's long gone. Only a couple of monuments stand now. A general store still operates about a mile to the east. It's been in business since the camp days, but it's not the original building. The original building was damaged in a flood in 1900.
Camp Verde was established to help protect the settlers from the Comanches. It was home to the US Army Camel Corps. This is where the first camels were re-introduced back into North America. The Army used them as pack animals to haul stuff through the desert. The Camp was eventually abandoned, and the Camels were sold off. Interesting history.

Very nice morning, though summer appears to have finally arrived in full swing. Looks like we'll be pushing 100F daily, for the foreseeable future. Looks like AM rides will be the new normal for a while. I'll have to push back my plans for more long rides.
