FCR28 In USA?
« on: January 04, 2024, 01:47:42 pm »
I'm looking at projects for a 400f race bike and the most popular opinion is the bored oem carb which would be my first choice. But I see a lot on Japanese instagram pages these 400f street bikes with FCR28 carbs. Are these even obtainable in the US?

Maybe through Webike (they're in Japan.) I've bought Mikuni TMR's through them. To be honest I think the TMR's are a better design  (and I have run FCR's for about 20 years on my FJ1200.)

Yes, you can buy them through WeBike. I have a set on one of my CB400F's and a set of CR's on another.
I prefer the FCR's.

I would like a set of the Yoshimura branded Mikuni TMR-MJN's  but they are big $$$.

The FCR's are expensive too, but the exchange rate is decent at the moment.

The stock carbs can be bored out to 24mm. Rick Denoon in Canada is the man for the job.

Well there you have it from the authority on 400's. ;) The FCR's are light years ahead of the CR's.

My Question : Could you send me your Set up from your Carburettors ?
The Basic Set Up is not working well , and before i spent too much Money for different Set up Parts .......

Lol....I am no authority on anything. And every time I think I am sure of something I find out I am wrong.
The only thing that I am sure of, and that nobody could deny, is that I have a mental problem and collect too many CB400F's!

It's only because of smart people on this forum (like you), that I might sound like I know anything at all. :-)

Hi rudi,
Sure, I am happy to share my set-up with you. But, as I have found, you can have two identical bikes with identical settings and they will perform completely different.
So, for starters, here is the engine:
Yoshimura ST-2 hollow camshaft
Kibblewhite valve springs
Yoshimura 54.5mm pistons (466cc) with doubled up base gaskets
Heavy duty cam chain with TTR adjuster
I think I have a modified oil pump in this one, plus oil cooler with thermostat
Dyna coils and electronic ignition
Replica Yoshimura Exhaust (Kaminari Racing)

FCR28 final set up:
#122 Main Jets
#45 Slow jets
EZT needles, clip at 2nd position down from top.

Here is a link to a video of the bike (pre tuning)

I hope this helps!

Kevin, this is an amazing set up, going to use it for my race bike inspiration folder! Did those twin disk brakes need a custom hub? Haven't read much into the twin disks on the 400 but on my 550 if was simple enough. Would love if the same principles can be applied to the 400 ie: longer bolts, another stock rotor and another stock caliper.

The 400 fork lowers only have 1 leg with caliper mounts. So I wonder if different lowers were put on to mount the second caliper. 🤔

Thanks Rudi,
The twin disc brakes use stock CB400F hub. The right fork leg is an aftermarket part I picked up in Japan. This set up is using Brembo calipers with thin, modern, floating discs and a Brembo master cylinder.
I also have a dual disc set up that uses a CB550F hub and forks. It is heavier and the forks stick up from the triple trees.

Hello kevin,
yes it is true : Two Identical CB 400 Four motors but they react different......
May be my CB 400 Four Motor is too Special....
ported Head with + 1,5 mm Intake Valves ( from Kawas. Z 550 modif. )
Hardened Insert ( Sinter Metall ) opened 1mm exh. 1,5 mm intake
Yoshimura ST 1 Camshaft ( timed in )
500 ccm Sleeves /Piston ( from Australia )
Heavy Duty DID 219 Valve Train Chain
6 Speed Race Gear Assembly ( WEBIKE JAPAN )
Modified Oil Pump ( Kaz Yoshima )
Modified Gear Box / Secondary Oil Pump ( MC AGAIN JAPAN )
Stainless Steel 4/1 Yoshimura / Kaz Yoshima Repl. Exhaust
Electronic Ignition ( German Distributor)
Std. CB 400 Four Advancer with new springs
KEIHIN FCR 28 Carbs

As far as I remember from the 2023 Season
# 120 Main
Clip in 3 Groove
# 45 Slow Jet ( I am not sure...)

Throttle response is tricky : no idle under 2000/2200 rpm
Throttle response allways with a short Time of no Reaction, no smooth Acceleration

When I put on the Keihin CR 26 much better Responce , fast Acceleration , smooth Operation

Did you try adjusting your accelerator pump on the FCR's to improve acceleration? The cam duration  and larger intake valves may reduce vacuum at idle enough to make it spotty. I'd just turn the idle up. It should also help get rid of that short time of no reaction coming out of corners etc. Also.....have you synched the carbs? It makes a real big difference.
